The new camera body from RED: Weapon

I'm afraid I don't understand your point Liam. How have they "been had again"?...

(EDIT)

...All RED did is give people a heads up that a new camera is coming down the line, and if they want to upgrade (which you don't have to do!) just make sure you go Dragon before NAB. That's all. That's it.

They have been "had again" because IMHO the timing of this 'announcement' has nothing to do with Red's upcoming upgrade and everything to do with a little German camera that shoots ProRes 444 to internal CFast cards at 200fps. It may be that Jared and Jim are just entertaining themselves, but I think it's a PR tactic designed to create as much noise as possible. We've seen it before, and it works every time. I think Jared and Jim are a class act, but these 'announcements of an announcement' is a tactic that is feeling a little long in the tooth now, and that some of the fanboy posters on RedUser are damaging the brand.

Thank you "Ryan", from "The Office".

Cute but pointless. Throw quotes from sitcoms around all night. "whatever man*" Grow up.

It can be a good tactical move once. However, if you do it everytime, then people know that you are sore.

Remember the Scarlet launch to coincide C300 launch? The words uttered like "we bring a bazooka to a knife fight" still makes me squirm. And who had the last laugh? C300 became a huge hit.

RED's nomenclature is based on its tactics. It wants to create a loyal group of people like a "cult". I repeat, Cult not a brotherhood. So all the branding and communication uses the words like Bomb EVF, Bomb Squad, Fire Chief etc etc. As happens in a cult, the members stick with you till they have their last drop of blood. RED wants to have such a loyal group of people who will keep on buying again and again. So they won't mind paying a premium for things including accessories. On the other hand, a Sony buyer can tomorrow buy Panasonic and then Arri or Canon etc.

However, I must admit, even by their standards "Weapon" is the lousiest name given so far. First camera was RED one. Then came EPIC. Fine, the EPIC signified that this camera is the top of the game. Then it started going downhill as far as branding is concerned. Dragon is supposed to breathe fire... However, the moment you add it to your Epic saying Epic Dragon, the meaning of the imagery is lost. Dragon also evokes archaic imagery. As opposed to Epic which is such a positive name. We all love our Epics. Do we love dragons? No. We are taught to fear dragons. So on a psychological level, the branding went downhill. And now this weapon. Is it an ice pic? Is it a knife? Is it an Atom bomb? To me this name "Weapon" is a damp squib.

A brand which is seen as a rebel when it started, mellows down with age. Now RED is not a rebel anymore. It is one of the Establishment. It is one of the big camera companies. It is not a Black Magic or AJA launching a new 4K camera. So the imagery which had served the purpose for RED in the beginning will not work now and hence needs to be hauled up and changed.

It's a camera not a lifestyle. It's not a goddamn religion. Look at the product. Do you like it? If yes then buy, if no then pass. It isn't any more complicated then that. Why people feel compelled to throw fire from the rooftops baffles me. Vote with your wallet, not some dribble on an message board.

*Stuart Scott said it best, not an adaptation of a British comedy

This, I agree with 100%.

Right, but who cares? The people that find the product to fit their needs will buy it, the people who need something else won't. The Arri Mini isn't an A camera, it is something you put on a gimbal or at the nose of a helicopter. It's a non-starter. It isn't a throw in a backpack and shoot 100fps 6K camera. I'm sure it will be fantastic at what it does, but what it does isn't a cure-all panacea. It's a specialized camera. These companies are in it to sell hardware. I think they should use whatever means they have to sell as much as they can. Why would you fault them for that?

I think they would sell a few more cameras with a different PR strategy. But, what do I know, I'm not a billionaire. And yes, ultimately, who cares?

I'm still waiting for someone to start making BLUE cameras. Then you'll have a choice between the RED camera or the BLUE camera.

I'm looking forward to the BLUE Heroic DragonSlayer upgrade. I hear it will be called Automomous Sword. It will have a turret system on it.

Do we love dragons? No. We are taught to fear dragons.
They dropped the dragon fear curriculum in our schools a while back. Something to do with discrimination against dragons.

Honestly I have no problem with the RED naming convention. Yeah it is pretty teenage boy and it would work better if teenage boys could afford them. But I do like the whole military spec look and feel. Makes me think "rugged" and "purpose built."

I appreciate this discussion has polarised some opinions. But let's keep t friendly please.

Please check forum rules if you are unsure of what they are as theres a few posts getting over the line. I'd rather let the discussion go without any heavy handed moderation - so play nice.

Also, remember theres a down vote button in the bottom right corner - feel free to use it. After three the post becomes hidden. Self moderation is the key.

Just to clarify a point one poster made - Jim was not the founder of DVXUser and played no part in it at all. That credit belongs to Jarred.

I was surprised at the direction this thread took. I thought it would be mostly speculation about what would be inside the new camera body.

@ Gillvane apparently not.

So we have run through the full gamut of , Red cameras never work, Red is dead, Red does deals to get cameras on set, Red is vapourware, Red is never used by real professionals, Red has been selling the same camera since 2008.

Apart from the name thing and it's marketing strategies which everyone has been discussing ( which means the marketing has worked BTW!.....doesn't mean I like it though) there has been no discussion of where Weapon is going none. ....nothing.

Is it even possible to bring up RED on DVX without inciting so much heat , so much negativity ? Looking doubtful .....very doubtful .

I'm thinking maybe Macy's or Kim Jong Un...just think of all the colorful scenery in NK....!

For those really concerned with the name, if you do enough research you'd find that you have the option to have it shipped as "stealth". Where you can get it shipped without the name written on the body itself.
