The new camera body from RED: Weapon

I'm starting to think they should just offer a subscription service. $10k a year and you have a permanently up to date camera!

making the KineRaw Max 6k camera more and more appealing each day. i still think the Red One MX, once it got the bugs out, was their best camera. Less fan issues, better ergonomics, xlr and bnc connections. 800 ASA sensor, no switching OLPHs - menu system and boot time were bad but still overall their best outing. Oh well, maybe the Red Weapon will be their new best. But I doubt it. No other company hints at a new camera without specs and asks its devoted userbase to "just wait one more year" - without giving any more info.

I feel really badly for camera owners. Constantly having to buy and upgrade their cameras. That's why I only buy the previous generation's toys. Used. The whole industry has changed greatly.

They really need to get a professional to work on their branding. Surely this bullish "we are the disruptive underdog, at war with the film industry" strategy needs to be put to one side?

It's like their target market is 22-year-old males.
You can't get a can of Coke through TSA, but RED has no qualms about making us list "weapon" on a customs form.

It's even weirder to glorify the war culture. Shooters are, by nature, people who are creating something, not destroyers.

It's usually better to name a camera with a nice name like Alexa but a Weapon wont fly with me.

I'm not offended by weapons. I go to the gun range now and then. I'm not an international journalist or a film maker traveling abroad all the time so the customs issue isn't a big deal to me. But it seems like you would stick to a theme with your brand and camera line. Like if you are going with Epic, then you have the Dauntless and the Valiant as other cameras in your line, synonyms for Epic. Or if you are going with Dragon, then you have the Phoenix and the Hydra, etc. more mythical creatures. When you look at teh Red family of cameras and their nomenclature "Weapon" just seems kind of haphazard as a name. Unless your other offerings are going to be the Bazooka and the Flamethrower, lol.

I can't say that Canon's nomenclature has much flair to it. I mean it's very functional, the C100, C300, C500. Obviously C is for Canon, and the higher the number the more features and the more expensive it is. But still it's just alphabet soup, like the FS700 or PXW-Z100 by Sony, the Panasonic HC-X100, etc. Black Magic took a hint from Alexa, and just gave their new camera a sort of pleasant but uncommon name, Ursa, instead of just a bunch of letters and numbers. [h=1][/h]. I do applaud Red for having a little more imagination than just naming cameras with letters and numbers.

Personally I think its silly that everyone has such a strong opinion about it. Its just a camera name. I personally could care less what its called. The camera makes the name...not the other way around.

Its not like "Canon" is named after a weapon...wait ...nevermind. Okay...maybe its an outdated weapon.

I don't know. There was a lot said along the same lines when they named their new EVF's Bomb and it turned out to be no big deal.

It's just a name. I for one, don't care what they nane it.

Yea....REDrocket....BombEVF....REDBomb Rep...

Its about context. They just have an aggressive branding scheme. Its tactical. Can't believe people care enough to discuss it.

Canon doesn't mean 'cannon'. Canon with one 'n' means an ideal set of standards, aesthetically. It's quite a nice name.

My problem with red is that they claim to be ahead of everyone's time, in a time where the camera is made to disappear, by making their cameras overly present on set. I can't take it seriously, good image or not. It's not a theme/mindset/workflow/attitude that I stand for at this point.

I don't have a strong opinion about it. I think the discussion is mostly because there's no details yet on what will be inside the Weapon camera body. When those details emerge, probably during NAB, I'm sure the discussion will turn to that rather than the name.
