The Lovely Bones

Uh, hope I'm wrong, but it looks like they gave away WAY too much in that trailer.

Nothing much to give away. I read the novel (which is quite beautifully written btw) and it's really not about finding out who the killer is or avenging her death, but rather about how her death affects the people around her. They have to play up the thriller aspect in the trailer obviously but the film will hopefully not be like that.

I'm assuming that this movie is all RED? It looks at lot sharper then film, that's for sure. And I think that's a good thing. The More detail, the better IMO.

I'm a big Peter Jackson fan. I'm gonna go into The Lovely Bones completely blind, albeit with a slight notion of what the premise is. Haven't read the book. Haven't seen the trailer yet, and won't watch the trailer either.

I have faith in good old PJ. He hasn't let me down yet, well except for The Frighteners, which wasn't the worst movie ever though. Plus that one was quite a while ago anyways. I'm not worried.

so what was shot on RED?
and why would you shoot on two different cameras?

I remember seeing an article or maybe it was post on REDUSER.com, that showed a Red One mounted on the front end of a helicopter for some aerial shots they were doing on The Lovely Bones. My guess would be that the Red One was used for things like that, basically shots were it wasn't as easy or practical to use a 35mm motion picture rig. They might have also used the Red camera for visual FX shots or background plates.

We all know Peter Jackson is a fan of the Red One from his WWI short. Also, didn't they use the Red One on District 9, which Jackson produced?

I read the book, and hoped I would one day be a big shot director who could make it into a film with an excellent cast. Been following it's development for about 3 years.

One thing to remember. In addition to the great LOTR movies, bad King Kong, hit and miss Frighteners (from which Jackson said he learned alot), fun genre movies, a brilliantly pulled off faux documentary --- Jackson gained international respect with a small character (female) driven piece, Heavenly Creatures. (Notice I said respect / acclaim, not notoriety which he already gained with Brain Dead, Meet the Feebles, Bad Taste.)

I thought King Kong was a mistake on the heels of LOTR. Whatever you think of Speilberg's work, the career model is there. Giant Popcorn. Small Character Driven. Giant Popcorn. Small character driven. I don't kow why Jackson would have wanted to put himself in the position of having to deliver two megasmash hopefully critically acclaimed popcorn blockbusters in a rowe. Should have gone LOTR, then Lovely Bones (IMHO), a film which wouldn't have to kill at the box office, not be incredibly FX driven, and would just have to be, you know, honest and good based on a great source, and establish you as a director not just exclusively for popcorn stuff.

Anyway - I've been waiting for this movie from him for a while based on my interest in the material and think he can do a great job with it based on Heavenly Creatures. The material is great. If he casts it well and excercises good taste, gets out of the way of it if necessary, chances for succes are high.

Yes I agree. The whole story is from her perspective we're there blow by blow for her death so we know who killed her. The basic gist is girl dies and watches her family and the cops look for her killer and is unable to explicitlt communicate with them. Which sound kind of TV movie-ish but the execution n the book is great. The murder is in the setup and the story is about how the different people deal with teh grief / loss / investigation.

EDIT: watched the trailer. Only thing I don't like is the faux saturated look of limbo. You can't get prettier than nature. Try a little desat. Less is more. But to try to be more saturated and colorful than nature just looks fake and Willy Wonka-ish to me.

Yeah, that's the trick with natural environments. Sometimes it is hard to find that perfect balance between realistic but still natural looking saturation and bland or boring looking outdoors stuff.

I shot some stuff over the last year for this weird semi-doc thing I want to eventually complete this year. It is about the Sun. I remember watching the raw footage of some of the first bits of stuff I shot and how I originally thought I'd color grade this stuff like crazy. But then I realized it probably doesn't need it. It's a weird feeling because normally I love to color grade and create stylized looks.

Of course, sometimes a more stylized look for outdoor environments can work, depending on the material.

The Frighteners is one of my all time favorite guilty pleasure films. I must have seen it 10 times. I love that movie.

The Lovely Bones looks amazing, although I know nothing about the book. I can't wait for this one. It would be good to see PJ rock something that does not have any Giant CG Creatures fighting other Giant CG creatures. He is one hell of filmmaker and I am pretty sure this will be a great film.

I do agree with Jack, King Kong could have waited, It was just too much following LOTR. Although I liked it, LOTR set the bar way too high for Kong to climb it.
