"The Letter" - short film on the 7D

wha?

I guess something must be wrong with me cause this is getting high marks from everyone.

I disliked it very much. thought it was obvious, over-acted and had a bad ending.

I did like some of the shots- the interview w nurse/Dr was nice. very well shot. But I guess I put more stock into story than HOW anything is shot. I understand you were testing the camera out, but we as filmmakers need to always remember to put story first. I'd rather watch an intelligent script be shot on a flip HD than a bad script be shot on 35mm.

But huge kudos for finishing this. that's the true first goal. excellend on that point. I just disliked the obvious and overdone story line.

As a WGA, I'm totally with you on the idea that great stories and excellent writing should be top priority.

But I'm sorry, how is this story line overdone? I get it if you are coming from the "there are no original stories" angle. But if not, how is this cool take on pre-existing conditions not original?

I'm not saying you had to like it but to call it overdone seems off base.

I think what he means is the sadistic revenge/torture fantasy short is over done. If so, I agree. The French short "Max" that was posted yesterday is similar and got similar rave response, and not just for it's production value. People love to see people get tortured, even if they're innocent, they can feel better about themselves if it's a jerk who "deserves it" but they like to see pretty girls get it just as much.

You can see this when ever there's a DVXfest, a quarter of them involve variants of someone holding a victim hostage in a secluded room, torturing them, then killing them as the punchline, mostly it's a psycho killing an innocent. This is the basic formula, people change the mise' en scene to suit their taste but you still feel it's the same short over and over, which is why Sonic Freak feels it was obvious.
