The. Lens. Thread.

FD won't work on EOS as the flange distance is too short. You can get FD-EOS adapters, but they have a lens in them to correct the distance. This results in a 1.2x mag and reduction in optical quality, though for cine that might not show.

Sqig, why won't the Jupiter 9 focus to infinity? I thought that if it was M42 spec, used with a proper M42-EOS adapter, infinity focus would be preserved.
Ffordes have one for £59 and I was going to take a punt, but if it won't work, I'll save my money.
Cheers,
Dave

Dave, the Jupiter 8 that squig mentioned is a M39 screw mount type for rangefinders like the Zorki (leica copy). I doubt it would give infinity focus just from knowing how shallow my Zorki was. Your Jupiter 9 would probably work with a M42 adapter.
Its confusing, but these Russian lenses are all cool, based on older leica designs. Can't wait to see footage. I gave my Zorki and Jupiter away two years ago unfortunately.

yeah like dado said. The jupiter 9 will be cool when I get the M42 to EOS adapter. I was researching lenses before I made my GH1 MKII decision and I forgot the jupiter 8 was a rangefinder lens. I've seen photographers with rangefinders mounted on the G1. My 3yr old is really interested in photography so if I make any money on the film I'll buy her a G1 and give her the jupiter 8 and teach her how to use manual controls heh she'll probably teach me. I might look at getting another russian 50 if the minolta doesn't look any good with the extra glass. and there's always the super tak.

I would be careful mixing Russian glass with Japanese for any serious narrative work. Very different look and coloration, to the point that it might be noticeable to the layman.

dadoboy and sqig thanks much for your answers. I thought it might have been a L39 / M42 confusion (On my part!). The description just said "Jupiter"
I think I may take a punt after all, along with a 180 f/3.4 apo-telyte-R and some more adpaters.
From what I've read in another forum, most Japanese glass tend to lookes similar, and different to German glass, which also look similar.
Dave

for 59 pounds I'd go for it if it's in good nick. Check the blades are ok although it seems most russian lenses have a bit of oil on the blades. I paid over 200 bucks for mine landed but it's mint. they did make the jp9 with an M39 rangefinder mount too I think.

Well, I've been an' gorn an' dunnit now innit!
Just bought the 85 f/2 and a Leica 180 f/3.4 Apo-Telyte-R (Bit different prices!)
Oh yes, and some more lens adapteres.
Dave

I'll have to let my credit card take a breather, but I'll look for a Leica 35-70 f/4, supposedly razor sharp, and maybe.....what? I don't know yet. Was going for the leica 90 f/2 but maybe not.
Possibly a Zeiss 25mm Distagon.
Possibly a Leica 28, if I can find one that fits
Then? Dunno

Hey guys. I found out some awesome info on a few nice prime lenses that I will share when I have time to sleep, but for now, I wanna ask what you would recommend as far as 28mm and 85mm primes? Any 1.8 or below ones that look awesome and are a low price? Anything that stands out I guess... Could be 24mm or 35mm. But yeah. I know what I want as far as 50mm, I think I know what I want as far as 85mm but it is probably too high of a price for me for now. So thus I need cheap recommendations for the 28mm and 85.

Quick question about 28mm lenses. I've read a bit about distortion. Is this a problem? I was thinking a wide lens would be good for shooting in narrow conditions, but then the faces of the actors might be distorted. So yeah, what are these typically used for? Only wides? Mediums too? And I guess 24mm would be even worse huh? Or am I wrong?

Thanks guys.

Any standout 100-135mm primes would be cool too now that I think about it lol. :cheesy:

The new vivitar series 1 85mm f/1.4 looks like a good lens it's made by samyang in korea. here's a thread- http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=1603380 it's also rebadged as a bower in the US. The russian jupiter 9 f/2 costs less than half as much and is very well regarded.

I have a nikon 28mm f/2 ai they're going for about $300 US. The vivitar 28mm f/1.9 and f/2 are good lenses and sell for much less.

The nikon 105 f/2.5 ai is one of my favorites and has a very good reputation as one of the best portrait lenses around.

I have a question about the tamron though. I heard that the focus ring on it only spins a small amount. As in, every tiny movement changes the focus in a very large way. Is this true? And does the smoothness make up for it in your opinion? Thanks.

Yes that is true - The rotation range on the Tamron is smaller than my Canon lenses. However, I tend to think of this as an advantage. On my 50mm 1.4, I've found at times difficulties to pull of a rack focus because I couldn't rotate my wrist enough to reach a focus point. On the other hand, I guess some could argue that they would prefer more rotational travel to finesse the focus pull. However I approach the latter point more as something that you can practice and get better on.

not exactly budget, but i'm lusting after the Canon 85mm f/1.2L II.

you can always rent it from lensrentals.com though.

this one isn't really a comparison other than the same focal length, but it looks good too. also available for rent on lensrentals.com.

The 85/1.2 is a sweet lens, but not a lens that can be shot hand held. The FOV is simply too long for hand hold shooting on the 5D. However, the op was budget minded and I would recommend the 85/1.8 over the 85/1.2. Being an owner of the 85/1.2, I think I would rather own the 1.8 instead due to the weight/bulk issue. However, I scratched the front element of my 85/1.2 and thus can not get reasonable resale value out of it even though it doesn't affect the image :(

Keep in mind that any lense longer than 50mm is difficult to shoot handheld on the 5D2, unless it has IS. I shoot video on 5D2 primarily hand held using 17-40, 50, 28-75, 24, and 70-200 IS... No 85mm prime will have IS so an 85mm lens will be limited to shooting on a shoulder rig or tripod.

28mm is not really wide enough to cause major distortion, but any FOV wider than 50mm (normal view) will cause some degree of distortion at the edges. It's just a matter of your level of acceptability. Check out www.pixel-peeper.com to see shots from the various lenses you're thinking about.

The Canon 135mm f/2.0 is an excellent lens. One of the sharpest prime Canon produces. It's about $900 new. There is simply NO reason to buy the Nikon version of the this lens because you lose the AF and distance scale.

Hey guys what about Canon FD lens primes? Better for GH1 or just as good on the 5D? Just curious..

Very difficult to adapt FD lenses to the EOS mount, which is a real shame.

There is wide angle perspective, and wide angle distortion. The two are not the same. Any wide used close-up will give an exagerated but true perspective cf a standard lens, but only cheep ones will distort, nearly always with barrel distortion. I've been trying out stills with a Leica 21mm Super Angulon, and the drawing is ruler-straight, whereas an old 28mm Tamron Adaptall from my FD days barrels like mad.

Barrel distortion is something different, but any rectilinear wide angle lens without barrel distortion will have perspective distortion, ie: stretched out heads etc..

My Voigtlander 15mm is ruler straight with almost no barrel distortion but boy! don't put any subject in the edge of the frame!
