The Lake: A Canon Rebel T2i / EOS 550D film

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to get your opinion on one of my first proper attempt at an "art piece" with my newly purchased Canon EOS 550D. It is my first ever SLR camera and I am learning new things every day.

Here is the video.

I shot using the Technicolor CineStyle and only applied an 'S-Curve' in post. No grading or colour correction. Please let me know what you think and how I can improve.

Well, the video is a bit shakey, there is way too much focus pulling imho. But the main thing is - whats the idea behind, what is it trying to tell etc. I dont see any.

This has a ways to go before it has the quality of one of those "art piece" videos. The point in those videos is usually the cinematography and equally as much what it is you're shooting. Neither one in this video is spot-on. The cinematography is kind of bland and the things you're filming are kind of bland as well. When you watch other "art piece" videos they seem incredibly simple to make, but the fact is that they are not. They really require a cinematographers eye. That said, the footage in your video wasn't necessarily bad, it just didn't work well for this kind of video. It was just kind of average. You need to think out better camera angles.

Moving the camera isn't always the best way to get a dynamic shot, especially if you're just panning left and right or up and down and especially if you're going handheld. Find something amazing to capture with your camera and let that do the work instead of using the depth of field and camera angle only. Also, color correction! It makes such a huge difference. I usually use just RGB curves and a slight tint filter to help desaturate things a bit. I'm sorry if this seems a bit harsh, just trying to give my honest opinion. Good luck on your future projects!

this looks more like a test footage vid than an art piece. I'd suggest learning a bit more about framing and composing shots. Just youtube some photography tutorials. And def WAY too much rack focusing going on. I know its nice to do when your just getting into this...we all did it :)

c
heck that P. Bloom vid. Yes he has a slider and a wicked location....but there are panning and static shots that are framed well. No tonnes of rack focusing. Find interesting things in your location and frame and compose them nicely

You mentioned its your first slr...so no worries. Keep at it keep shooting, keep learning...and you"ll be much better :)
