The Karate Kid remake

It's not like he tells the kid he's teaching him Karate. He refers to it as something else in one of the trailers. Kung Fu maybe? Not sure.

They are just using the Karate Kid name because it's easily recognizable.

That's exactly what I hate about it.

And I mean, it's not like they're selling more tickets because it's called The Karate Kid instead of The Kung Fu Kid, if it's got will smith's kid and Jackie Chan in the trailers and on the posters.
People would get that it's like The Karate Kid but with Kung Fu. They're not that stupid.

It is billed as a Karate Kid remake....

will say it is cool that they filmed in china, and also apparently were able to film in the forbidden city... nice backdrop...

it's a kids movie.... what more is there to talk about? :)

And yes, I bet they will sell more tickets based on the name. Joe dad grew up wiith the Karate Kid, when he sees a remake coming out he's likely to take his kid to it just based on that. He knows what to expect.

It would be stupid to remake a film and give it a completely different name.

Ok forget it. This is a stupid argument.
You guys are Brittish, I don''t expect you to understand.

kung fu actually means martial arts in Chinese, it does not mean Chinese martial arts.

karate is actually originally Chinese and not Japanese.

what the character learned in the original movie was basic martial arts and not specific to karate.

The characters in the original were memorable, and the catch phrases and one liners were everywhere.. making it a very memorable film, as cheesy as it was. You can't replace "Wax on, Wax off" with "Jacket Off"...its not even close to the same.

Nope, gonna disagree with you here. As a lover and fan of "Americans being taught martial arts by some old Asian guy to defeat bad guy films" - I've seen everything from "American Ninja I - IV to "The Hunted" and "The Last Samurai", (and these films are why I do what I do today) I soon as I saw "Put on the jacket", "Take off the jacket" and saw how it worked I got that OMG feeling. I immediately knew this was the new "Wax on Wax off" and I loved it for it NOT being Wax on Wax off. It was something new that gave us a taste of the old. They new they had to do something like that and it appears they got it right. The thrill is seeing something so simple as the movement used for cleaning or the basic movement for putting on a jacket work as a defense mechanism. This was awesome, I don't want to see Jackie Chan a Pat Morita imitation.

And Jackie Chan's narration made it a definite for me. Sorry guys, but I love martial arts films with platitudes like "Kung Fu is in the way you treat people...". How many films do you see that in? Basically today it's just badguy is bad, he does bad thing, break out the maritlal arts. I mean when it's all said and done. I want to see this film. And I think some of those who're so against it want to see it too, but it's cool to bash remakes so jump on the bandwagon. If the trailer truly reflects the movie, I want to see it more than Iron Man 2 or whatever other explosion heavy noise maker that's out there.

I'm not disagreeing with you about this particular film, Nate, but there are major distinctions between Karate and Gong Fu, not just cultural, philosophical and historical.

It's a big deal.

I know there are huge distinctions but the film is simply not about that. The "Karate Kid" is a franchise name. Just like "I know What You Did Last Summer" changed the plot some so it could keep the franchise going, but the "Know"ing and the "What You Did Last Summer" always has to be part of the title.

You know, if they'd HAD to make another Karate Kid movie, here's what they SHOULD have done:

Forget Macchio, Forget Miyagi.
No remake, make it a stand alone sequel, with Johnny Lawrence as the mentor.
Johnny sees a kid being bullied at school, takes him in and teaches him Karate because he's grown since the original and sees himself in the bully. So he wants to repent. He feels bad for the kid.
But the kid obviously is the protagonist.

^that would have worked for me. William Zabka deserves a comeback.
Well, you can catch what he's been up to since Karate Kid, here in this video:

Not bad, but it's not "Put on the Jacket. Take off the jacket." Come on. And of course the trainee has to get an attitude about it, because it's not the way they view martial arts. In these films someone always has to use a non combative movement to train in fighting. In part two I think the love interest shows Daniel some traditional dancing and he uses it to parry and block blows. Don't remember part three. Part 4 "The Next Karate Kid" Monks train the girl in a myriad of ways and she also learned Kung Fu. (Shaolin Monks taught her, remember, Shaolin monks know Shaolin Kung Fu).

I mean heck, why not get Steven Seagal and call it "The Aikido Kid". It's a hundred ways it could be done, but this is "The Karate Kid" this one just happens to be learning Kung Fu like the last one. And this whole idea of remake "ruining" it for the former generation is bullocks.

What about the Sherlock Holmes movie? I mean it gave new life to those old Holmes movies, like this will give new life to the old films. I'm willing to bet Karate Kid will be in heavy rotation on multiple cable stations. But honestly kids don't want to see your (or my) old crap. They see the new versions and get into the old versions. My dad loved the old Sherlock Holmes movies. I loved Holmes because of what I knew about him and the fact Batman is partly inspired by him, but I never wanted to see old black and white Holmes films. In the past few months I've seen almost all of them. They were pretty good. That was owed to the new Holmes movie. Stop trying to hold whole generations hostage to your old fanfare. No one cares but you grandpa. (That's to all of you, including me).
