The Karate Kid remake

Not sure I agree with that. A remake is a remake, a rehash is a rehash. It's still no more or less original than a Karate Kid remake. You could very well say that all re-makes these days are to draw in a new younger audience, they just aren't as "good" as they were years ago.

I wasn't saying it's ethically superior, I can just understand it on some artistic level. Anyway, the original point was that somebody said he doesn't care if Hollywood makes crap remakes because it funds indies, and I'm just saying Hollywood doesn't need to make crap remakes to make lots of money. I don't want every Hollywood movie to be Schindler's List but jeez, I'd even take a Legally Blonde over this rehash.

Haha. That's preference! I think I'd watch this over Legally Blonde... yes, I know you might have been joking.

I don't disagree with you that they can make new crap, it's just a lot easier said than done. Old crap is more'a sure bet because you can get an older audience to go "oooh I want to take my kid to see this like my parents took me to see it when I was young!"

New crap's more like..."I dunno...this new crap seems suspiciously crap to me... I think I'll wait for On Demand."

Anyway, long live the dream! Haha.

That's okay. I've gone on record saying I enjoyed Legally Blonde more than I should have, having testicles and what not.

Actually, I did as well. Just not the following. To its credit, it was well presented, well-acted and it had some funnies. The rest, however, nah.

Clash of the Titans needed to be remade? Why? It's fine as it is, to me. So why "need"? .

The technology exists now and it can only help to upgrade the film with better action, better monsters etc. Stop Motion was good then... but now it's just aged. What they're doing to Clash of the Titans is a good thing and it makes sense.

What they're doing here to the Karate Kid... urgh! Just give it the RIGHT BLOODY NAME!

I dunno, I think it introduces it to new generations. That's obviously not their main intention, but it does. It's like all of the remakes from early cinema. They kept re-making the maltese falcon. Each one was different from the other, and it eventually started the film noir genre, but it was re-made every 5 years or so and it introduced it to a new generation.

This is 20 years later. I've seen Karate Kid, but soon the younger gen won't want to see it because it's 'old'. Never saw clash of the titans, and never thought of watching it...

I dunno. Plus the trailer for karate kid actually looks decent. The only thing that bugs me about it is the name.

Saw the new trailer. One thing is for sure, Smith's kid sure as hell took this role seriously.
He pulls off some pretty amazing moves and looks like he actually knows Karate in the end.

As far as remakes go... I don't see much wrong with this one.

Actually I'm sure he does. At least I believe this is what helped him get this role. I had seen him on a Disney Channel show a couple of years back in a role where he knew Kung Fu. It didn’t show much of anything (in terms of his skills) but I figured he was taking lessons in real life.

This is how I feel. I like a good fun but not too serious film, while at other times I might feel like watching something very serious.

As for remakes, I think the problem is too many too frequently. Good remakes and adaptations have lost their novelty because just about every film is a remake, reboot, or adaptation.

Another thing I've always thought about remakes is that they should more or less be reserved for either really old films that while still good, are just very dated; or for films that never lived up to their potential. Take the Battlestar Galactica series. The old one was kinda fun but due to limitations at the time was too expensive to produce. Also, they were too worried about trying to be like Star Wars. Now years later, the new BSG series was able to carve out its own identity and last longer because it basically took the overall concept of the original and improved/updated just about everything.

Something like The Karate Kid, while a bit dated is still a pretty good movie. I don't really see what else they can majorly improve upon besides updating it for the present day. But then, if that is all a film can do, it will be pretty irrelevant in a decade. Don't studios understand that it is the films like Star Wars, Avatar, The Matrix, Seven, Sixth Sense, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, and PIXAR films for example, films that were bold and original that have true staying power and in the end generate more revenue over a longer period of time?

Of course the excuse is that it costs too much. Yeah right. Isn't the mantra with digital effects something along the lines of, "if someone can imagine it, we can now create it"? I find it pretty depressing that the industry has reached this point of being able to create realistic or stylistic depictions of the wildest imagery that crazy ass filmmakers can think up, yet all that potential is being squandered. We should be strolling through the midst of a large open air festival of cinematic renaissance, yet we are stuck in the backwoods of remake country asking drunken yokels for directions before, well, if you've seen Deliverance. . .

i did not like or care for all the bad remakes made recently,

i do however look forward to the karate kid, the trailer did sell me the movie as a good c+ to b movie.

it's been a while since i have seen anything new with that high rating.

this summer definitely looks better than last years.

I would rather see a remake of Crossroads than Karate Kid.

*waits for a "you mean the britney spears movie" comment*

I've only seen Crossroads once, and remember liking a lot. Too bad it's not as easy to find as "the other Crossroads".

But if they remade that today it would starr Zac Efron. Wait 5-10 years. Maybe real music will become popular again. Weirder things have happened.

As far as I'm concerned it can't be any worst than the original. Karate Kid sucked ass. At least in this version they will do some pretty sweet moves. With Jacky Chan playing the late Pat's part it has to add something great to the mix. Besides to be perfectly honest it is meant to be a kids film anyway.

Stop hatin'. The film looks good. Glad to see a young brother getting that martial arts training and saving the day. And it's the Karate Kid because "Karate Kid" is the franchise name and "Karate" used to be the generic word for martial arts, like Kleenex is to tissue or Xerox is to copiers. The movie looks like a great time. I will be seeing it. Relax a little. You can still rent the old one if Ralph Macchio turns you all on so much.

Honestly, if there was no Karate Kid movies previous to this would this look like a good film. Yes. There is no proof what so ever the film will be bad. Everything in the trailer looks good and seems like it will be a fun film. So what's the point of arguing over remakes. Bet if they paid you to do a remake bet you would. Remakes are here, I like seeing some of them. They're fun sometime if it something you like and they get it right. This is more of an reboot/expansion considering the kid's not playing Daniel. I mean they did four of these things for goodness sakes. Let the "Kid" live on. They're remaking "The Last Dragon" too. I been waiting for that one.

And let's stop pretending there are NOOOOOOO original films coming. There are, just not the remakes and they're not all remakes.

I'm not disagreeing with you about this particular film, Nate, but there are major distinctions between Karate and Gong Fu, not just cultural, philosophical and historical.

It's a big deal.
