The HVX at GV Expo

I was at GV Expo today in DC and got a chance to hear Jan's latest song and dance and play with a working HVX200, so I thought I'd post a few random thoughts for you sharks. :) Jan confirmed that production was on schedule and she just received a batch of production demos--production units without serial numbers. So the production line is cranking and Panny is set to deliver on their *original* timeline of the end of the year. Jan played some new footage from the camera from one of the Japanese engineers and his crazy friend. They strapped the HVX to a model helicopter and a mountain bike and took some--uh...engineer-class footage. It was hard to tell much because the presentation was out on the show floor which washed out the screen. More promising--Nancy Schreiber will be shooting some demo footage next week, so there should be some top notch material in the pipeline. There was also some demo footage that demonstrated the complete lack of compression artifacting--even in fast pans. I haven't kept track of all these threads, so I don't want to repeat what's already been posted, but Jan's presentation had some interesting info about the chips and the resolution and available frame rates. Using a resolution chart the HVX was measured at about 750 lines of vertical res and 700 lines of horizontal. After Jan's presentation we got to play with the HVX and everything looks great from my perspective. People have made comments about the weight, but it really doesn't seem significantly heavier than the DVX--to me at least. I thought the ergonomics were excellent and the camera handled well. I *loved* the focus assist--a 200% magnified box that pops up on the screen--and allows you to fine focus--*without* an HD monitor. The slow zoom was silky smooth and the lens is nice and wide at the short end. If you're used to a DVX, the HVX handles like a piece of cake. I watched a wide variety of people handle the cam and everyone looked pretty comfortable. The Firestore FS-100 should be ready in May and they had a mockup at the show--interestingly, it'll have it's own preview display. All in all, the feature set whomps everything else I saw at the show and this cam is going to cause problems for high-end HDV cams. I ran into fellow DVXuser Matt (mcgeedigital) and he mentioned that Discovery HD won't be accepting HDV but will accept DVCPro HD from the HVX, so I think the HVX is pretty much in a class by itself.

Jan is the lady in the first picture.

I was worried about the focusing, but that 200%-assistant sounds great! wow, Pana keeps surprising me over and over with nice features.

they really slapped a brandnew HVX to a bike already? are they nuts? :D

You said she clarified the frame rates? Can you elaborate on that? It seems that that information hasn't been settled.

Barry,

We really appreciate the post. Thanks for confirming the slow zoom. I'm really excited about this camera.

Thanks for the post Barry. And I think that's the first picture of Jan that I've seen too. Is that her in the first picture? Nice lenses! (just kidding)

Looks like the resolution may not be all that we were hoping for, at least in the horizontal direction. Well, I guess her slide did say that they wanted a balance of resolution, low light and dynamic range. Can't wait to see what that balance looks like on the big screen.

750 vertical and 700 horizontal?
What's the resolution of the Varicam just to set a comparison...

Granted we haven't actually seen res charts or anything on the HVX200 to validate the numbers, but the mentioned horizontal res is dramatically more than the Z1 while the vertical is about the same. Those numbers are actually quite good, considering.

Seems like the Sony F900 CineAlta was around 850 L/ph on average; if memory serves me correctly. I'll have to put one of the VariCams up on a chart and check it out; I don't really remember what it was on average.

Sony claims the F900 is around 872 L/ph, but when we tested it, it was a bit lower like between 830 to 850. I really don't remember exactly off the top of my head, just that it was slightly lower than the claim from Sony. Although there are things involved that could result in slight variations in results.

***Edit - Added the second paragraph***

700x750? cool. Finally we get a cam that can do almost the full PAL resolution if we rotate it 90° (just kidding)

Got this on DVI:

"Martin Biebel, a journalist for the German video magazine "Videoaktiv digital", has made a resolution chart comparison between the Canon XL H1 and the Sony HVR-Z1 and come to the following conclusions:

SD, 4:3, PAL:
- HVR-Z1: 480 (horizontal) x 450 (vertical)
- XL H1: 550 (horizontal) x 400 (vertical)

HDV, 16:9:
- HVR-Z1: 610 (horizontal) x 750 (vertical) with a loss of sharpness at the borders
- XL H1: 800 (horizontal) x 800 (vertical) with coloured hems at the borders"

thx to robert niemann
