The Great Camera Shootout 2010

..and why isn't it on their front page anymore. If you go to Zacuto.com, you can't even find it anymore. Are they still doing this or not?

They forgot one test it seems. The one where some tourist videographer with a DSLR is digging around in some cave in the Afghanistan /Pakistan border and he stumbles upon a dying Osama Bin Laden. Osama decides to grant this lucky snoop a once in a lifetime interview (in exchange for a sip of Jack Daniels). And just as our erstwhile journalist gets to the million dollar question.... "did you give orders to attack the United States" ... the 7d, 5D, t2i, etc.... would crap out at 12 minutes due to overheating sensor. No joke.
That's the test that matters most for me. I'm still strumming my fingers waiting...

Funny synopsis, I'll give you that, but really if you're smart about it, it's totally manageable. I shot 2 days in quite possibly the WORST conditions possible for that camera. Middle of the desert, 110 degrees Fahrenheit, shooting from 8am to 5pm with few breaks, and it performed perfectly only every overheating momentarily once each day.

How?

I planned for it. The camera always had a cloth covered cold pack resting on top of its body, and was always under sun protection. Whenever possible the shutter was closed, and in between setups would occasionally rest by the footvents of a Honda blasting it's AC.

It CAN be done, it's just a matter of working WITH the camera, instead of against it.

I'm hoping for a part 4!. Apologies if I'm repeating what anyone else has said, but haven't had time to read this entire thread ...yet. For me, the 2 tests that were most 'illuminating' were the latitude and sensitivity tests.
My takeaway for the former was
When faced with an extreme lighting situation, where you have no control over the lighting and there is important highlite detail, always expose for the highlites, and correct for the midtones and shadows in post.

For the latter..
Canon has a LOT to learn from Nikon in designing sensors with low light capability!

My only critique is that a few subjects were touched on, but weren't explored in any detail, leaving the viewer(at least myself) very frustrated. For example the suggestion of first converting to a higher quality codec (I think PROres was mentioned) BEFORE any post work-editing.

Unsure which shootout this in reference to. The one I watched it was as if Canon had sponsored the thing. Total lack of any respect for the GH1. Fanboys with big money.

Or worse yet he wore something that caused a moire. This shootout seemed to be bought and paid for by Canon. It was as of the "pros" were afraid to say anything bad about Canon. I know there were flower shots with the model that I thought looked BETTER than the Canon not just on par.

The Great Camera Shootout 2010 was a three part web series documenting DSLR's and how they compared with 35mm Film. The web series was a huge success and Zacuto received a 2010 Emmy Award for best informational program.

Now the followup that you've all been asking for. The Great Camera Shootout 2011 (GCSO) is currently in production and it's purpose is to showcase digital cinema cameras. The Great Camera Shootout 2011 (GCSO) is a documentary film of the Large Sensor Test (LST) conducted by Robert Primes ASC and a full staff of scientists, engineers & digital specialists. Zacuto has nothing to do with the administering of the LST. Zacuto was the impetus behind the LST although its sole purpose is to create a documentary about the LST which it calls The Great Camera Shootout 2011. The LST will be the most scientific camera comparison to date testing these cameras: 35mm film, Arri Alexa, Weiscam, Sony F35, Phantom, RED, Sony F3, Panasonic AF100, Canon 5D and Nikon D7000. The LST will have a recorded and non-recorded screenings in LA and 15 recorded screenings in the Zacuto theater in the Zacuto booth at NAB. Viewers will watch the LST in 2 & 4K resolutions and comment on camera as to what they are seeing. All of this material will be edited into 3 webisodes that will make up The Great Camera Shootout 2011 and will premiere on the Zacuto website in June 2011. This will be an Epic digital experience presented by Zacuto. The Great Camera Shootout 2011, Producers: Jens Bogehegn, Steve Weiss & Scott Lynch. Directed by: Steve Weiss

You guys freakin rock!!! I found this to be a very "grounding" sort of experience (watching your Doc). I know that DSLRs have their place....so, I'm NOT a "worshiper". I'll shoot with any tool that fills the need effectively. All that said, I MUST SAY, that after watching your Doc....it made me realize that people HERE on this VERY FORUM....have not given the due respect that DSLRs deserve. I come to that conclusion when I see people with ", ASC" after their name, and their point of view is ~MUCH~ more forgiving and open minded than many folks here. To be honest....it was really inspiring. It DID NOT make me think that I needed to bark at folks here to sound the trump of repentance.....it just made me "check myself" and make sure that I'm being fair when looking at DSLRs. That said....I MUST CONCLUDE that the overall view here (on DSLRs), is unfair, unbalanced, and frankly a bit biased. Me saying so isn't going to help or hurt....but it really made me think after watching this Doc. Thanks a MILLION Zacuto!!!! I look forward to seeing the next round. ...and thanks for including the D7000!! I'm a bit tenative...but very interested in seeing how it holds up.

EDIT: PS...you REALLY should include the GH2!! Leaving it out is going to leave the door open for complaining for a lot of users on this forum. It looks pretty sweet....I hope you will consider including it.
