GH4 The GH4 is here!

The highlights to me are that one doesn't need the giant box to record 10 bit 4:2:2. Unless I'm reading it wrong. Most disappointing (If it can be called that) is that there is no 4:2:2 to cards. Again, unless I'm mistaken.

Not certain, but this from the press release seems to indicate the GH4 can't record 10-bit 4:2:2 to internal SD cards (it can output it live to record on a suitable external recorder, but not record it internally):

=============
*3 Setting the HDMI output picture quality

[4:2:2 10bit]: You can output the image through the HDMI connection in higher picture quality, but youcannot record it as a motion picture or still pictures. Ideal when the HDMI output is to be saved onexternal devices.

[4:2:2 8bit]: You can record the image while outputting it through the HDMI connection. Ideal forrecording while checking the motion picture on an external monitor.When using 4:2:2 / 8-bit output,video is recorded in 4:2:0 / 8-bit on SDXC/SDHC Memory Card.

Will be interesting to learn which is correct.

Exactly, you are right....but the HDMI is suitable for recording to an external recorder, so one doesn't need the Panny module to record 10 bit 4:2:2 HD

Good point.

So it sounds like you can connect the GH4 HDMI to a Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 or Ninja 2 and record 1080p at 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes up to 220 megabits/sec.

I wonder if the GH4 HDMI can output 4K (either full or UHD) for recording on a device such as a Convergent Odyssey?

You can't record 4:2:2 to cards at all, unless I missed something. If you set the HDMI to send 8 bit 4:2:2 out, the image to the card will be 4:2:0. When you select 10 bit 4:2:2 out of HDMI there is nothing recorded to the card.
And when just recording to cards, I believe it is 8 bit 4:2:0

Looked quite different than Blackmagic and reminded me of the Canon 5D MKIII quite a bit. Still.. that 4K looked great!

Interesting… I'm glad I skipped on the GH3, great cam, but this is what I was waiting for… The Gh2 served me well with no issues & still does. That Gh4 though beautiful.
