FS5: The FS5 goes cinematic with Lights

Cinematic is an extremely wide term. Could we agree that "professional", "tasteful", and "artsy", are descriptions that fit inside that designation?

If anyone uses any of those terms to describe a video they deserve a punch in the face.

The cinematic term is necessarily wide because the aesthetics of cinema are so wide and are constantly undergoing change. The moment you try and define what cinematic means will lead you down a dark hole and become an exercise in political correctness fascism, thought censorship and elitism.

I believe the 'intent' of the piece should be taken into consideration, it was clear to me the intention of the producer was to create a short film that contained the aesthetic of cinema while experimenting with various optical effects. It was very obvious to me that this production did not use the aesthetics of a local news report or an ego massaging corporate video or a Dogme95 production and its ambition was that of a cinematic style.

Who defines what cinema is?

Which fascist decides on what is cinematic and what isn't?

Is Battleship Potemkin cinematic?

The reason 'cinematic' is pointless as an adjective in the professional arena - and especially on internet forums - is because everyone then goes on, as we are doing here, to waste page upon page upon page arguing semantics about our unique (and therefore not helpful to anyone else) definitions of the word, without actually furthering discussion or understanding.

40 years ago 'cinematic' meant it had the aesthetic and values of a theatrical cinema release, and usually was.

20 years ago it meant flagship shows being shot in 16:9 on S35mm.

15 years ago 'cinematic' meant 24p in a video camera.

10 years ago 'cinematic' meant a 35mm Ground Glass adapter

8 years ago it suddenly meant shooting wide open at f1.4 on Canon L glass and repeatedly missing critical focus on a full frame stills camera while refusing to use a tripod.

4 years ago it meant a Helios 44m-2 shooting contre jour with some fishing wire over the front element.

You may as well be talking about the chi of a camera for goodness sake. 'Cinematic' means nothing. And it means 'everything'. OMMMMMMMMM

I don't know. Since when effects make anything cinematic? The video looks nice and creative. But I have to agree with Ben here.

Since the very first film edit in 1895

And fast forwarding through some classic years when Citizen Kane did this shot

VFX have always been a part of cinema.

I thought it looked really cool. Has that Bruno Aveilian (s.i.c.?) vibe. Probably going to do something similar for an upcoming fashion project.

I feel like a number of cameras are so good right now that it's easy to get "Mojo" (the new term to replace "Cinematic" in 2016) from any of them. It's up to talent of the filmmaker. The cameras are secondary now.

Bravo on covering almost all of the examples, only one I'd add is the most current, which is the use of some far out LUT with as dull colors as humanly possible.

Haha I can't believe I missed out the most obvious one. The 'turnyouriphonentoanAlexaSuperlUT'.
