FS5: The FS5 goes cinematic with Lights

Dig the overall cinematography, but the images out of this camera appear to have a paper thin-like look and feel to them. Had a quick search on vimeo/youtube but have yet to see anything impressive produced from the fs5. Anyone else feel the same?

Its just the overuse of Lightleaks plug-ins that give it that overdone DSLR shallow depth of field look. I think without those Lighleak plugins it would be much more cinematic. Lighleaks scream "look what I can do without actually doing it"

I think it looked great. I love the look and style for this piece. It might not be what you like but I think its well executed and exactly what the cinematographer was going for.

The FS5 is the worst camera to film this style of footage. Shooting into the sun with lens flare looks really cool, but the FS5 has the potential to ruin shots like this with highlight fringe/aliasing artifacts. The guy walking past the sun at :33 exhibits horrible discoloration on bright edges. The floating bubbles at 1:23 and 1:27 have horrible artifacts. This is my number one complaint about the FS5, which I otherwise feels is a decent camera (I use one at my job). Shooting into backlight can look beautiful and is a style I would like to use often on my shoots at work. But I consciously avoid it now because of the fringing. Not cool, FS5.

The FS7 is quite capable of giving those horrible edge effects in CUSTOM Mode under the right conditions too. I wish Sony would sort this out.

How on Earth does a light leak give something a shallow depth of field look?

Your right Ben,
I didnt choose my words the best (english is my second language) i trying to say that light leak plugins are overdone with DSLR's i.e 5D's and weddings and that clip reminded me of that and didnt say 'cinematic' to me. I felt like it said "look at these cool plug-ins with my super slow motion"

Cinematic is subjective and means : relating to the cinema and having qualities characteristic of films. (yes i did Google that translation :) )

According to the filmmakers' comments on Youtube, they didn't use any plugins or software, but rather, broken glass, prisms and Vaseline.

So they did it by "actually doing it."

Yep no post filters is impressive. The shooting is impressive. Done with FS5 is impressive too.

Not everything needs to be cinematic, but for some it's their dream and goal to create images like that. As for what defines it, that's where it gets into a whole other discussion.

I liked the video.

Its pretty good.. but alot of dirt/smudge on the lens.. that AC was rubbish and has ruined the shoot.. but nice to see Lama,s getting the air time they deserve..I wish her and the young man the best for the future..

i do like the piece, but for this kind of thing i would much rather shoot with the FS7, it just provides a better file....
or shoot with A7rII and get IBIS with funky lenses....

it will be interesting to see what NAB brings in terms of new sony camera(s) and/or firmware improvements for FS5/FS7.....if the rumored FS5 raw upgrade does happen, sony will have to bring the same (or something similar) to the FS7....

either way shooting into the sun and flares always looks a lot better at higher bit rate....

Looks great to me. That people can get images that nice from a camera that cheap seems like a positive thing to my mind. Plus in the age of the internet - youtube compression can be blamed for all the slight nasties that flash up for a second here and there.

Hello! I´m the Director, Cinematographer of this shortfilm, and made the color correction too.
I know some people ask about the plugin, but I didn´t use any plugins for light effects. All is made with broken glasses and prisms.
Thanks a lot for sharing my shortfilm, all your opinions are useful for me. thank you

Hi, I´m the director/cinematographer of this shortfilm, no plugins used in this video, all was made with my personal collection of broken glasses, prisms and some vaseline, using classic nikon nikkor lenses at max aperture ;)
