The Friday the 13th Film Series

Michael Bay did alright producing the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, so I'm not really all that worried.

Did I just say that?!

I agree Horse

The Texas remake kicked ass. A first rate horror film.

I loved the original, loved it. The remake... not quite so much. Most of it felt a bit like a "new" set of retread tires. Useful (a few good scares), but that not satisfying.

I did enjoy it (mostly R. Lee Ermey, even though he was a little too Sergeant Hartman) enough to buy it, but I probably wouldn't give it a "kicked ass" endorsement.

I think Jason vs. Freddy had a LOT of potential and in the end I felt cheated out on something that could have been really big...

Much like the old Universal monster match ups the plot is irrelevant. You're going to see Freddy fight Jason, and that sequence kicked ass.

I APPRECIATE the original TCM for what it accomplished and what it inspired. But, as a film watching it NOW, it's boring. I fall asleep everytime I see it. Its better than the bizarre series of sequels that followed, but I am one that liked the remake better. That's not to say I don't have problems with it, because I do. But overall, I really enjoyed the remake. Jessica Beil is two of the reasons I really liked the film... hehehe... seriously, some stunning cinematography, great tension and some truly horrific scenes (like having to kill your friend).

Nice Horse

I find the first 4 to be great horror stuff; the rest just spiral into poo poo.

I love Crispin Glover in 4. Too funny.

In general I agree.

However, in Jason Goes to Hell, the opening shot with the hot shower chick and his capture... not bad. The action waitress who's good with a shotgun... pretty good. And what the hell, the final scene tie-in with Freddy... made me smile. It's definitely the most action-packed title in the series.

Also, the "Jason in Space" flick had an amusing scene where Cronenberg gets killed. The liquid nitrogen face smash was pretty original as well.

But in general, I prefer 1 and 4, with 2 and 3 tying for third place.

The box set is a great deal.

Yeah I understand what you're saying and I do agree that the original may be getting a little "long in the tooth" as it were. The remake can certainly boast that the quality of the stock, the lighting and even the composition of many of the shots themselves surpass the original - all making it feel more contemporary, polished and professional. However in terms of the raw suspense, the dread, the isolation and the sense of claustrophobia - I prefer the original. It's usually what I remember seeing at an earlier, more impressionable age that tends to have that sort of resonance with me.

Jessica Beil... well, ya got me there. ; )

I loved the film (own it). One of the better horror films to come out of hollywood in recent memory.

How can anyone get excited by a Michael Bay produced Friday?

I just saw the Island this week. I never thought a movie starring Scarlett Johansen would leave me feeling so castigated. How dare Bay try to place the blame on his actors too. That flick was poorly directed and full of cheap and predictable plot devices and character gimmicks. Ugh.

And after that disgraceful Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake i have nothing but low expectations for this "origin" movie. Yes i loathed the remake. WEAK and pathetic. Rob Zombie did a better job with pretty much the same premise in House of a 1000 and Devils Rejects. Now that second one is one of the best contemporary horror films in this humble horror fan's opinion.

But as for this new one, if i so much as see a glint of white hockey mask anywhere in this film I will take it upon myself to tear down the house of Platinum Dunes. Don't change the series' already flimsy continuity.

And as much as I would love to see Kane Hodder do the burlap sack. I don't see it happening in a prequel. But to be fair he did get to be Uber-Jason. That had to of been fun for him.

First of all why would Jason be in a prequel other than showing him drowning in the first place?

If it is a remake and not a prequel, Jason is likely not to be there since the catalyst for the whole series is:

1) Jason drowning prompting Mrs. Vorhees to avenge his death
and
2) Jason coming back to avenge his mother's death.

Either way, prequel or remake, Jason in a hockey mask or as anything other than a drowning kid is unlikely. Unless when they say "remake" they're going to remake the whole series in one movie...not too hard.... Mrs. Vorhees beheaded in the opening "shock" sequence... Jason returns to avenge her.

C'est La Vie.

It's not totally unfeasible to have Jason in a prequel movie following the continuity set forth by the Paramount films.

In Friday 2 they showcase that Jason has been alive and roaming the woods for a long time. Remember his cabin? How awesome of a murderer was he when we were already introduced to him? He was a seasoned pro. Herego he had been killing people long before we meet him in the series.

As for Mrs. Vorhees, who's to say she wasnt aware of Jason's creepy cabin in the woods? After all she was psychotic. But perhaps she also blamed his current mental state on them as well. Maybe one of the reason's Jason is so demented is a direct result of brain trauma he suffered from the drowning. (A type of retardation?) Although this would negate the whole demon entity from Jason Goes to Hell which is fine by me.

I guess what I'm getting at is when Platinum Dunes optioned the franchise rights they were doing so to tell another chapter in the Jason Vorhees legend. And since all the current rumors are pointing to a prequel of sorts and not a remake they will have to find some way to make Jason the central character of the film and not Pamela Vorhees, although it would be nonsensical to have a prequel without her character.

I'm tired and giving this way too much consideration.
