The FresHDV Interview

This guy's a hack, I've got better credits than him. P2 will not live forever, neither will HDCAM, but it will work fine for many years and become at least one industry standard.

"Through it all, I learned how to frame a shot or two and fell in love with writing." Oh just a shot or two. Why would anyone read any further giving him credibility.

He states 2minutes of 1080 run time on 8GB cards. Check yer facts fool, it's more like 9min per card. And he's not accounting for anyone quite fine with 720p24N which will yield 40+minute run times on two 8GB cards. He should truly take to heart his own words: "If you’re creative, you find ways to work around shortfalls. THATS WHAT INDIE PRODUCTIONS ARE ALL ABOUT. We can’t have THE BEST equipment all the time. Deal with it. Think on your feet - get creative in post." Yes, Josh, please do. HVX200, Z1, FX1, XL-H1 users ALL are. You have budget for an F900 on your next shoot. Cool! Congrats! Now quit pissin on thousands of artists who will trounce whatever your next project is.

So get off the high horse balls and realize P2 is yet another way to be creative. Will it be in use 10 years from now. Probably not, and quite possibly neither will HDV.

And blasting the XL-H1 saying it won't sell. "QUIT SLACKING!" he says to Canon. Right. Slacking. Try groundbreaking. The whole interview reeks of arrogance and sarcasm of a spoiled trust fund college kid. As we all have a**holes, Josh has his opinion.

I tottally agree Holyzoo, this guy seems to be jelous he cant keep up with the industry and people are begging for his autograph, and he shows this by trying to crush film students dreams by saying everyone goes and then thinks they can make a masterpeice, but this technology being so easy these days you dont need to spend 10000 on film and renting a camera per picture you can afford to fail many times.

This just sounds like ignorant jerk who is mad that his technology isnt cutting edgea and people arent handing him grants to rent cameras like the f900. I bet you 1000$ that is panasonic called him to demo the HVX because they thought he was a good canditate to demo the product he would be drooling over an HVX because he thinks he would be getting the dues he thinks he is owed.

The only thing it seems to make this guy happy is if he we all went backwards about 20 years where we were doing tape to tape editing so his Betacam with mixer would still be cutting edge, and he wouldnt have to compete with indie film makers and small budgets, because he dosnt want to write a good storyline.

The only point he makes that I agree with is that people chase the 35mm look way to much, but Im not saying its bad but some people just get obsessed.

It took a very long time to sell me on the idea of the P2 format, but I was finally won over. This guy won't even give the idea a chance. Not to mention that a great portion of the time, being tethered to a notebook or Cineporter would not be an inconvinence at all...

What's this garbage about 720p being "medium definition"? Last time I checked, it is most certainly considered high def... More importantly, there is no native distrobution format for anything above DVD res. right now. Even once Blu-Ray or HD-DVD takes off, it will be two or three years before most of us will distribute even 720p material in its full glory. By then, there will be bigger, better, and cheaper cameras anyway...

It's a shame people like this get so much press. It's one thing to state your opinion, but if you're going to do it in a public forum, you should really have a grasp on the underlying facts first...

Just curious if any of you had seen this interview, basically trashing the HVX (or at least the P2 strategy):

Any comments?

As far as DVCPRO HD acquired on P2 media - I'm sorry but P2 is not the future. I know many Indies want the HVX to be the final piece in bringing their masterpieces to life, but shooting 1080p on P2 media isn't the solution. The $900 8GB P2 cards hold less than 2 minutes of 1080p footage. That is completely asinine. As a one-man crew, carrying a laptop around or strapping a hard drive to the camera is not an option. I believe the industry will eventually progress to a tape less format, but P2 is not the answer.

IF you want to trash something, GET YOUR FACTS CORRECT!!!!

To me the guy comes across as a big BOZO!

In late 2000, I put together a 45-minute documentary of a bunch of stupid bulls*** from those early days. I'd like to say something of substance came out of my teenage years, but it was really just crap. There are still a few VHS copies of that documentary floating around and I'm sure one day I'll end up having to answer a bunch of questions like, “Uh, THIS is how you got started?”

“Yup.”

... Looking back, I wish I would of had the balls to forgo school entirely and spend the money I now owe in student loans on my own set of gear. I taught myself photography, FCP, After Effects, Photoshop, and Flash and now I have a $30,000 piece of paper my current employer doesn't give a s*** about (BA in Communications and Multi-Media). ...

Canon’s XL-H1 is nice, but its WAY over priced for what it offers. Sorry Canon, but go back and try again.

720p is f***ing retarded. Its MEDIUM DEFINITION!!! Buying the JVC HD100u is almost as stupid as people who are buying the DVX100b. 720p will be an outdated format before anyone figures out how to use it to make something of substance. Sure, its great for broadcast work NOW, but what about in 18 to 24 months? I have no problem with the image quality of this camera - but ITS STILL MEDIUM DEFINITION!!! Why buy a piece of equipment headed in the wrong direction of the future?

I've edited out the cuss words, but if someone come in for a job interview and talked like you see above, I WOULD NEVER HIRE THIS PERSON. So, his feelings on JVC, Canon, and Panasonic are just a bunch of hot air to me.

Sorry, but some people would be better off if they ate lots of EX-LAX for their condition. :D

Hee! Hee! Josh Oakhurst seems to hate everything. He needs to relax (and like everyone else has said to get a little more informed before he starts shouting at things...)

Here's what I imagine happens when Josh goes to a diner...

Josh: What is this cr*p? This coffee is pathetic. I mean it's red and tastes like sh*t. The beans are poorly ground and it's an inferior blend. The person who made this should be publicly humiliated.

Waitress: It's tomato soup.

"The only people married to the idea that video HAS TO look like film are filmmakers who are scared their project will suck otherwise. "

HA HA

This guy's rants are ridiculous. May be after all he should have gone to some filmmaking school, now it seems too late

Although most of his ranting is a bit riduculous, I do have to agree just a tiny bit on the Canon rant. My XL1 was my first video camera, and it rocked my world. I remember first shooting with it, and it was revolutionary for me.
But the Xl-H1, I think Canon has completely aliented and abondoned their original user XL1 fan base, with its pricing level, and only offering HDV in-camera. Canon is no longer the revolutionary leader that it was with the XL1.

So in late 2000 he was a teen, and six years later he still sounds like an angry teen?

Oh yeah, I'll make my purchase decisions based on his word.

just a few thoughts

just a few thoughts

is it just me or does anyone else feel like 720p will have a very big presence in the 'HD' world b/c as on demand TV downloading grows and people watch more and more TV on their laptops, most people will be using laptops with a max rex of 1280x768 anyway? I mean, the whole transition to HD was set in motion 10 years ago but I don't think engineers or networks anticipated the time shifted / portable market (iPod video PSP, etc) which is lower than standard def right now.

on another note, I'm staying at a friends and he has a 50" pioneer plasma and direct TV HD. I watched discovery HD for the first time and almost didn't notice the HD b/c I was so distracted by the broadcast's compression. then I popped in a SD DVD of microcosmos and it looked absolutely beautiful.

oh yeah, this oakhurst guy sounds really annoying. discussing a format war for aqusition seems moot when you consider that most NLE ingest all kinds of different formats. in the digital age everything is just a file anyway, and the quicker you can access those files the better, hence my interest and faith in P2, aside from all of it's other advantages. the only 'format' war that seems like it will matter is the HD BluRay one, but even then, I'm inclined to think that any tangible HD format might be quickly surpassed by on demand HD downloads. I sure don't want a library of HD or BluRay DVD's. I just want the HD content on my HD laptop or HD video iPod.

Uh...I've never heard of him so why should I care what he thinks about film school students or P2?

Though this is off topic concerning his remarks on P2, I feel personally attacked for his remarks on film students because I am one. Look, I know the movie business is cut throat and competitive but just because some guy without a film degree makes it doesn't mean he's one of the demigods of filmmaking Valhalah. Regardless of your school or job, you should be paid more than someone who doesn't have a degree no matter what, unless I'm mistaken to the exception. I hate it when people knock film school or film majors and say that they're stuck up snobs or something to that degree. It's a slap in the face is what that is. Yes, some may not have the means or be able to afford school, so what does that have to do with the people that do? How is it their fault and why should they be labeled with a stereotype or cruel/crude image? Good for him, he made it. Will I make it? I sure hope so, filmmaking is a job like anything else, some are better and some aren't. Others have advantages, such as knowing the right people, and others don't and have to get by on their credentials alone if not talent. This guy has no right to mock the common filmmaker and those that try to go the extra mile for training in film in possibly both college and film school. But, bad karma for him, let's wait and see NOTHING happen for him.

As far as his comments on P2, nobody is a fool about cameras, we all know P2 is going to be phased out eventually. We also knew that with MiniDV and we all knew that with Video 8 and VHS/DVD. New technology comes around all the time and often leads to better results, will I be angry when P2 is phased out entirely? No, I'll have had a powerful tool to make films with, like people using 8mm and Super-8 film today, that HVX200 will still be kicking ten years from now when we'll be asking ourselves why we need 128-way core processors.

LOL: Dare I even enter this discussion?

Here's a bit more information about P2 as posted on my blog.

P2 Prices/ Capacity

During Part I of the interview with Matt from FresHDV I stated the 8GB P2 cards held 2 minutes of DVCPRO HD footage and were $900. This is obviously a typo and it was MY typo, not Matt’s.

Here are the current (2/22/06) prices from B&H of Panasonic’s P2 media (approximate DVCPRO HD storage time is in paranthesis).

2GB (2 min) = not listed
4GB (4 min) = $650
8GB (8 min) = $1350

When Panasonic first announced the HVX and P2 prices, the original 2GB cards were in fact $900.

Regardless, I still CANNOT embrace the HVX. I really wanted my DVX100 to have an HD older brother, but alas, ’tiss not to be.

Also, you guys should read an interesting banter about P2 and Film School between myself and Paul from SelfReliantFilm.com as also posted on my site.

The Machinist, I loved that movie. For me, it belongs in the same category as Memento. It's a brilliant film. Too bad many have not seen it.

As far as P2 goes, it is pricey now and storage is kind of low, but that should change in time. It's worth it to me. P2 allows many recording formats and kick arse slow motion and a tapeless workflow.

I think its funny of you Josh that you post

“think they’re the next Steven Speilberg, they’re pissed because they haven’t received the recognition they deserve, and they won’t take direction from anybody.”

When your banter sounds exactly like that.
