The facts on why Philip Bloom sold his EPIC

you mean me??
how come? this is a very interesting subject and seeing the post above me obviously shortening the life of the thread,
i was just trying to keep it a bit light, not getting heavy after every nasty response.
nothing wrong with that :)
correct me if i'm wrong.

I think he was talking about me. S. Matthews used to moderate Reduser, so I understand why he's a little defensive on this one.

Red states that if they don't like my attitude, they may not sell me a camera. Bloom's experience puts this policy in context for me.

And if you bought it already and don't behave they will take it away from you!!! Unbelievable.

Well then, don't believe it because it isn't true. They OFFERED to BUY it back from him. That's 180 degrees opposite from "they took it away from him."

From his blog...

"As the emails went on that person DEMANDED to buy the camera back as they didn’t want me to have it anymore. I of course was utterly shocked".

A very interesting read.

I'd be interested in seeing the other side of the story (if there is one) just for complete clarification

I have to say this does not make me very confident in red.

I don't visit reduser very often (I dont own a red) but i have heard stories of the almost cult like fanaticism that is common there.

I find this quite odd and i wonder how it actually got started.

It seems to me, from a fan's perspective at least. That red has been very unfaithful with delivery promises (features, price, etc)

And there are only so many epics/scarlets in the wild right now. so i wonder why the users there are so obsessed with red and defend it to the point of "internet violence".

They don't owe red anything. so why are they so devoted?

Im not trying to stir anything up, im genuinely curious.

Please don't discuss what happens on other message boards. We have a specific policy against it, and besides, it has little to do with Philip's post.

No I moderated an internet video game not reduser, just to be clear. Other than that he is correct.... I'm very defensive about the video game I used to moderate, that and embarrassed... very embarrassed.

There you go. That's pretty insane I would say.

Considering the personal responses I've seen Jannard give online, this does not shock me at all. You would think a millionaire would have no time to attack people who don't drink his own personal brand of kool-aid online....but here we are.

I've seen posts where people question RED and Jannard's response was "You just went to the back of the line". He was basically saying that he wouldn't sell a camera to those who "questioned" RED. I say questioned because that all it was, a question. I just wish the RED community had a better attitude towards moving images as it stands today. I remember the weeks leading up to the Nov 3rd announcements and all Jannard's posts. At this time RED is the least expensive way to capture 4/5k images. But really, for how long? Raw images moving. Again, for how long? I would respect RED more if they dropped the RED or nothing attitude. There are all sorts of great cameras out today and more coming faster than we can't keep up. I'm gonna sit on thinking of any new cameras for at least 6 months and see what comes along. Especially after 3 years of following Scarlet. Although the more I see the C300, the more interested I am in it.

Jim Jannard has passion, thats great and has been good for moving images. He just needs to calm it down and put a sock in it now and then.
As for Philip, I feel bad that the RED community treated him that way. He's a nice and fair guy and nobody deserves that sort of abuse.

Okay, "offered" and "demanded" are certainly very different connotations. But even so, nobody TOOK his Red away from him. They bought it off him, presumably even at full price.

I can't see how that's a bad thing. A defective camera that you don't trust, and you have the opportunity to get 100% of your money back? How is that a bad thing?

Sure the "demand" thing is ridiculous, But he could always just say "no thank you"'and in fact that sounds like what he did. He took them up on their "offer" later.

But again there are usually two sides to every story. You do know that Toyota was tried and convicted in the court of public opinion over the "runaway Prius" problem, which turned out to be 100% fiction, right? And IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn was tried and convicted in the court of public opinion, arrested, lost his job, disgraced and destroyed... And then the case was dropped because of a lack of evidence! And the whole Duke LaCrosse team was vilified by the public before being cleared of the accusations.

So there is every reason to give both sides the benefit of the doubt, and those leaping to conclusions are doing themselves and Red no favors.

I didn't want to comment at all on this but the last comment made me feel like I needed to add something...

I did no wrong and was treated very very poorly. When the camera is DEMANDED back in a rather unpleasant way and you are put the through the mill like I had been I had little choice Barry. Why would I want to continue being part of that? Until that point I wanted to carry on and make it work...in my post I said. It was the straw that broke the camel's back. Where exactly did I say "no, thank you"? I bought the EPIC for a reason and that reason has not gone away. I simply don't have it anymore so I need to adjust my plans...

Your last paragraph could be read as maybe what I said was not true? Yes there are two sides to every story but there was just one story here and I presented the facts very clearly and stand by them. As a moderator and someone you know I find that very disappointing to read that publicly when you could easily have written to me privately for clarification. Especially given that Jim has apologised for his actions...Big props to Jim Jannard who has made a public apology on REDuser.

I want to thank everyone for their support here and I respect Jim very much for stepping up to the plate and apologising publicly. This is the last I will say on this ugly matter. It is closed.

Thanks,

Philip
