The facts on why Philip Bloom sold his EPIC

This is why I have a problem with Red. Its not just the fanboys but the very people who work there that behave like raging fanatics. Of course, all the good people that also work there and all the good people that use Red are melted in amongst all these other idiots.

This is a really sad and embarrassing bunch of people for the film making community. Idiots.

The lone gunman sending the email is very disheartening. Many have made purchases because the people we trust no only tell us what products can do, but what they can't, and armed with that knowledge we still pull the trigger. How many knew the issues with DSLRs and still jumped in because we didn't care, and because we knew not only the issues but were also armed with the Rube Goldberg type workarounds for them? Having Bloom in as a RED user, at least for me, gave RED more credibility than anything they could have said and done, and knowing how they've treated him (admittedly in the form on one person) now, unfortunately, gives me more pause in ever dealing with the company.

And a ban from a public forum for telling the truth?

Wow.

That is horrible. Being denied to write about the bad points of a camera (which he had paid) and get attacked by a horde of raging red fanatics, THEN getting an email asking to sell the camera back. There's no easy way to go through that kind off stuff. I would've done the exact same things as Philip. (Without being as polite because I suck)

Something likes this would've never happened with any other camera manufacturer. Not Sony, not Canon, Panasonic, Alexa...

Forgot that! He paid for the camera; it wasn't swag or anything like that; he was a paying customer....

If you look at how users of Nikon vs Canon cameras have been following "their" brand and down talking the other brand it's peanuts compared to the RED cult. Don't step into it because it's sticky.

I don't think you can throw it all on a "lone gunman". It makes it sound like a low end worker at REd did this on their own. These kind of things usually happen because of a system wide philosophy that trickles down to everyone. It had to be high up person to make the call to buy back $80,000 worth of equipment. Red never liked criticism. They forgot that criticism can be helpful sometimes. And Philip should know that when he puts his life out there for the world to see he has to expect a certain amount of negative comments. He had to know, as we all would, that posting a tweet about how he got rid of his RED would be discussed and some of it would be negative. And theres always someone who doesn't know boundaries, maybe because of age or intelligence, that posts things that might be what he called libelous. Both parties to me are a bit self serving.

"even if our camera doesn't (always) work, you're only allowed to own one as long as you don't write about that fact" - cute

it's incredible how companies ignore the Streisand Effect at their own peril:

nothing Bloom could have written would have been worse publicity than this

Philip posted this to clarify things, he's done that. Lets all let this issue resolve itself, people taking sides on internet boards will only muddle things even futher and won't do anyone any good.

Its not about taking sides We're getting an inside look at how a camera company and a popular blogger conduct themselves.

And then you wonder why american camera brands are practically nonexistent! Red has been a totally embarrassing american manufacturing endeavor. They are developing cutting edge technology but at the same time cutting their arms off with all the crap. And the fanboys, oh the fanboys. The crazier ones are actually the ones that don't own any of their cameras! And they wish upon a star that someday soon they will. Grow up guys and act like professionals.

I was simply trying to remind people to keep things civil, because so often things like this turn into useless arguments about who is right and who is wrong. By all means read the artical, look at the posts, but be mindfull when posting here that this could be a very touchy subject and if you read Philips artical I'm sure the last thing he wants it to do is cause more pointless arguments on the internet. Thats all I was trying to say and now that I have I'll leave this subject alone as it has flame war potential written all over it.

Well said.
Consider that this threads warning.

Keep it civil, guys.

I find it extremely unpleasant that RedUser and DVXuser, try to hard to show they're views on integrity and good manners, when the very own Jim Jannard is the one to publicly rant on his forum about other companies. Also, moderators are happy to let pass ridiculous and offensive comments towards other brands, but if the same goes to Red, we either get a warning, a ban, or a closed thread!

So I ask, what gives these people the right to say what is and what is not good manners? When the main inflammatory attitude towards others comes from the very top of the Red chain?

Its ridiculous. And it will never work.

Before Red came in to the game wanting to play ball, none of this stupid fanboyism existed amongst film makers. I have never heard Canon, Panasonic, Panavision or even Arri mention a single word about Red (or any of the other manufacturers). They don't care. And Red shouldn't either.

Their defensive attitude is ruining all the chances Red has of becoming a really great camera brand, if they don't change attitude or put Jim locked away in a room, ranting only to himself, in time, Red will implode no matter what. And that is very sad. Because they have such great potential, such great minds working there and great film makers are doing amazing work with their cameras.

Why the defensive attitude? Why the attacks? Why the totalitarian views?

As proof of what I'm saying, my reply will either be deleted or this thread will be closed soon. What can you do...?

Trying to get another thread closed eh? not really helping here are you? the last line of your post to me shows your intentions...
