the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

I was asked to do a short intro for a monthly TV show called "Timecode" (which features the work of local filmmakers in New Orleans).

Here's what I came up with. Shot in 5 hours. The credits I added for the sake of the actors - they won't be there when it airs.

You have to ask yourself every once in a while, who makes a exchange for a lot of money out in the open during the day? hmmmm. I guess there was not a warehouse in the budget ;) Pretty good - I would have tried to make one of the characters more vulnerable so that the impact of betrayal would be more effective. Oh, and a shot from the sniper chick's POV would have given the audience a better sense of the danger of someone spying on the exchange.

Re: the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

I was totally let down by your threads title..

I wanted blood i tells ya! Blood!

it was cool.. but what killed it slightly were the gun shots sound fx... they sounded really cheesy.. and there was no reaction shot of their death... band dead... no impact.

and if you shoot someone in the back of the head at point blank range.. the exit wound is in the front.. he should be bleeding from the front... it is a gripe i have with many movies... blood doesn't spray in the opposite direction of the bullet... despite what movie squibs have us believe..

overall it is was pretty damn cool.. nice editing.

Re: the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

this was actually pretty cool. one of the best things i have seen here in a while for a dramatic peice. i liked the cinematography. and the acting was above the norm. great job. i thought the blood looked like water though.

loki, your right...  the front half of his face would pretty much be gone if it was a powerful weapon, but that gun used looked like a 9 or similar sized and the shot may not actually go all the way through the skull. ..but ive got to give the movies credit..  blood does indeed spray out the entry wound as well as the exit.

Re: the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

This was great. I really enjoyed this! The comps were wonderful, the exposure was perfect, the pacing was jiving and the POST work was superb with it's '24 homage' and eye-candy cutting. This reminded me of The Hire somewhat; which is a good thing.

The INFAMOUS 180 LINE BREAK was violated at 1:13; I know because I recently dropped the ball on this one. Fix it. Do a PAN and CROP and Flip the image!

I agree; The GUN Effect was sounding a little hollow; I would rather hear a Hollywood resounding BOOM! type effect.

This piece was Screaming for a DOLLY! Make one! This would have rocked even more with Tracking shots.

The portrayal of being SHOT in the Skull could have had more imapct I think with relaism; maybe next time watch SAVING PRIVATE RYAN to see a good example of how BODIES react when being shot; think RAG DOLL next time.

Anyway, I loved it. Well done.

Re: the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

Let me preface this by saying: I really loved your piece!  You have talent!  I cant wait to see more of your work!

I hope I am not 'Out of Line' with the following example.  If I am off-base or incorrect; please let me know.  I noticed the 180 Violation more than once in this piece.  It is something I am seeing more and more of lately from recent submissions; I did the same thing recently even though I thought I covered my ass on set.  I did not.

The 180 is more complicated than the typical LINE rule sounds.  Once your talent or camera starts moving around, it is easy to lose track of the line.

The following is an example from you film and some suggested corrections.

TO really confuse matters; the original establishing shot of the car pulling up was the key shot. That is the side of the line that should have determined the blocking. Not a tradegy to jump it from that wide of an EST shot as it would not be as a dramtaic line jump IMO, but still, the rules apply.

Re: the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

Nice edit work.
I don't mind the 180 flip.
True- Filmmakers should understand cinematic structure and rules, but in recent years viewers have been re-trained to accept broken rules.

Re: the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

I think your average veiwer hasn't a clue about the rules; all they know is that 'something is off'. Once that detraction in their thought process starts they have been removed from your film which is exactly what we don't want. We want to suck them in and keep them there in our world.

Re: the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

Wow John. That was awfully nice of you to get so in depth with my screw up! :D
I guess that's what happens when you don't storyboard first! Too late now to fix anyway, as I already sent it in. But you're the first to say something about that, so I can live with it.

To address a few things said or asked:

The exit wound
You guys have to understand, this was for TV. I'm not gonna show brains flying out somebody's head! But above all, I had a $0 budget. As it was, I had no fake blood on hand. The blood flowing from my actor's head was put in digitally.

Music
Music is from Run Lola Run. It was supposed to be a temp track but went so well with the piece, I just had to keep it.

I agree; The GUN Effect was sounding a little hollow; I would rather hear a Hollywood resounding BOOM! type effect.
I had other gun sounds, but it's a p9 like James Bond uses. Not very booming.

This piece was Screaming for a DOLLY! Make one! This would have rocked even more with Tracking shots.
I have a dolly AND a crane, there just was no time to setup and use either. Believe me, I would have if I could have!

I cant wait to see more of your work!
I have put up two other films on this forum. "Zer0" and "Don't lose your head". They're still around if you want to check 'em out.

Re: the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

what kind of color correction did you use? BTW loved the vid!

Re: the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

Whats next?

Next up (hopefully) is a quirky comedy/romance about a narcoleptic and a girl with the worst luck on earth. Too bad Mardi Gras is coming up so soon though, that would've made a great background to one of the scenes.

After that should be a fantasy drama I've been waiting 2 years to do. Maybe by then I'll be able to shoot on a HD-DVX! ;D

Thanks for all the thoughts.

Re: the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

Re: the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

I'm just wondering..
was that shot on a DVX?
it says "copyright 1998" at the end

Re: the eXchange: featuring blood & bullets!!!

Yeah it was shot with a DVX. The copyright was for the song.
