The Emperors-new-hack

I'm with you on pixel peeping the difference between 78Mbps Hack A and 78.5Mbps Hack B. Haven't even tried.

But the real news about the hacks is the "intra" codec. It doesn't take pixel peeping to see the difference in motion quality.

Personally I think it's just best to keep everything fairly vanilla, just use ptool to remove the ISO limitations and increase the AVCHD bitrate to something like 44mbps. Normal AVCHD is already pretty damned efficient and in years of shooting with my HMC40 and HMC150 there's been maaaybe a couple shots that would have benefited from the higher bitrate. Going super high on the bitrate, changing GOP settings, or shooting Intra all produce increasingly diminishing returns when you consider how much you have to spend on more/better cards to reap the benefits.

I agree, although it's difficult to navigate the personal views site and figure out all of this hacking business, it does take about 2 days of your attention but the benefits are incredible.

I ran a couple of tests comparing both the AF100 and the hacked GH2 and this is what i came up with:

And before i got on, let's not make this a, which camera is better and let's defend out favorite camera. The thread addresses the frustration with the hack and im just posting my experience with it.

You be the judge. But i like what i see! Even if it does mean a longer post process ( Sync'ing audio and converting footage ) If it works for you and you have the time to spend learning then you only have quality to gain. But if the extra time it takes to do this means you miss out on a job, then forget it.

You're more than welcome to share what you think is a better patch in the format that the link I provided. Meaning, spell it out so that we can manually input them.
My advice to everyone is to bear in mind that GH2 patch development is still very much in an initial Beta phase. Panasonic has recently released new V1.1 firmware for the GH2 that introduces 1080p25 and 1080p30 video modes that it did not previously support. The current version of PTool does not work with V1.1 firmware, and Vitaliy is working full-time on an update to support it. Once the V1.1 firmware is successfully hacked, a new round of experimentation, optimization, and careful testing will be required to produce reliable improvements in performance.

Those who are interested to test and try out currently available GH2 Beta patches are encouraged to investigate and evaluate ongoing development projects. However, aside from PTool itself, there are no "official" sources from which to download well-tested and verified patches; everything so far has been the result of individual efforts. Thanks to all who have welcomed and supported my own work in the past, I'm currently conducting reliability tests on patches I've developed for GH2 24H, 24L, FSH, and SH modes in 24p and 60p. Once PTool is updated with support for 1080p25 and 1080p30 HBR modes, I plan to optimize and test my 24p patches for use in those modes as well.

Well I did a test with highly detailed scenes and LOTS of movement due to high winds today to see how the hack I have loaded performed. I feel it passed. I was getting average rates of 130mbits with no dropped frames. Download it and take a look.

Ah. . . learning! Research methodology is something I'm relatively familiar with. Yes, I think it is safe to say that nothing in the threads that I've broadly addressed in my original post approaches scientific rigor. You also seem to be making the assumption that I haven't tried the hacks, or in some off-hand way imply that I am "inexperienced". I am wounded.

I reiterate: 1. Most of the "Vanguards" of hackism are FCP/Mac users. 2. No demonstrable improvements in DR. 3. No demonstrable improvements in color space. I never stated in my first post that hack proponents were strictly Mac users, in my second post I said: "I'm not saying that GH-2 shooters are strictly Mac, but if you look closely at the hack post workflows, the "grail" is usually to arrive at some flavor of Prores 422 through using 2 or 3 other standalone utilities/encoder/decoders." I will qualify my statements here and say that perhaps future hacks will make meaningful progress in dynamic range and color space, but I expect that by the time that happens we will be dealing with new cameras and new codecs.

Which brings up another point; people take this crap way too serious. . .I smell the aroma of REDuser forum sometimes. Oops. . .I've been black-listed (redlisted?)

PS: you can drop the didactic-shtick 'professor', I already have a committee.

There are many talented hard working folks on our site that bring additional perspective to us all in this community. Lpowell is one of them. You're fairly new around here (as am I), try to be respectful, your tone is clearly a personal attack, please stop. There are too many great things happening here to focus on the negative....or to make personal attacks. I'm no one here, just another happy member of this forum. Keep it positive. Cheers!

I guess to the original poster I must say this. What do you expect to see from tests of a hacked gh2? Should we gather all of our friends and get out lighting trucks fueled up, get location permits and fire up the lighting to test the hack? Why do you think you see flowers, garbage and street lights out window fronts? Well, I think because when a person flashes a hack to the Gh2 they go film their front yard then put it in the NLE, then reflash with a different recipe and go film their cat. Really? I've hacked my gh2 a few ways and every one of them have improved the image. That's the point, to improve. I also have every hack I loaded (on a mac Ipowell) saved and I can turn to the ones that work best for me. I'm getting 100 Mbits out of a $600 camera where I find the image is incredible considering. It's a $600 camera man. What do you want? Sure, it has limitations with color profiles, DR, and such. But when it works, its a nice detailed image. If you don't like it, don't watch hacked Gh2 footage.

Boy, you sure showed everybody by telling us all how much we suck for caring too much about internet posts!

*makes repeated, page-long combative posts*
*gets banned from internet forums*
*is unpleasant*

One of the points I was trying to make (and obviously failed at) was that without any type of shared or recognized testing method the results can be of questionable utility. One of the things that bothers me about all of the tests that I see posted (here and elsewhere) is that people often need to rely on blow-ups of frame grabs to demonstrate differences. I'm not convinced that this a useful way to determine anything about motion imagery. As someone has suggested in another thread in the GH cameras forum; in a double blind test of full motion footage would anyone be able to choose a high-bitrate hack from vanilla? My guess is that they could only in really high ISO settings, but even then. . .

I'm not complaining about the camera, I love mine, but chances are that before the end of the month there is going to be a GH3 that will turn the entire circus topsy-turvy again. It makes me pretty happy that I have also have an AF100 with HDSDI out.

I was about to respond, but then realized I need to clarify .... by "vanilla" do you mean 'unhacked' or 'low-to-moderate bitrate hacked'?

Wait. Am I the only one seeing the crazy banding on the right hand side (on the door)?

Just want to be clear because I thought the hack would help dither away most of the banding (or is this just from jpeg compression)?

The biggest difference for me is the flexibility in post and the Intra-frame motion. The stock motion on the AF-100 and GH2 with that "vector-frame" coding stuff looks horrible. Looks like almost like flash animation to me, where stuff is just sliding around the frame. Intra-frame motion looks like digital cinema... it's the only way I like to capture images now. The GOP3 is also acceptable. But the stock GOP of 12 means that there are only two REAL frames in an entire sequence of 24fps. The rest just save the motion changes and interpolate the rest. Intra-motion just looks more "cinematic" to me. Some people claim they don't see it, but it bug the crap out of a few of us.

Then there's post... I almost sold my GH2 in the beginning because any form of color correct would ruin the image. It was almost as bad as HDV. Sure my 7D was softer, but the H.264 50mb/s was much more robust. The hack took it into another league though. I can almost do anything I want to the 100+mb/s footage and it just doesn't fall apart. If you're not seeing an improvement here... you just must not be doing any post work. It's almost like working with uncompressed 8-bit footage. It's very nice.

I just don't really see the point of threads like this though... if you aren't seeing any improvements, then it's got something to do with you. No reason to call out an entire group of enthusiastic people and pretend like they're making something up.
