The Emperor's Memory Cards Are Wearing No Clothes !!!

Watch on a 4K (or higher, including HDR) display:
Shot on Canon 16-35 & 70-200.

Every manufacturer spins and makes great profits (with various levels of cringeworthy/amusing behavior/marketing), including Canon, ARRI, Sony and they all produce great images.

They've really nailed the video look.

I dig 24p for most footage: helps stay out of Uncanny Valley. However 60p with a cinema quality tone curve and grading has a special look that's not film or video. Especially when it's really high resolution and nature, etc. Not good or bad; just different like flavors of ice cream.

Every time I see 60p footage played back at 60p it has that "reality TV show" look to it.

Funny, to me, most reality shows always look like they were shot at 30P. It's not 24P and it's miles away from 60P. I hate it. 60P is fine for certain content and more appropriate than 24P for for certain kinds, as well.

Guess, that makes it garlic and squid flavoured icecream. Fine for live sports on a jumbotron, not so great for narrative, documentary or anything that requires a cinematic cadence. IMHO:-)

Well, let's not forget that RED cameras can make very nice images, but anyone can mess it up badly enough to make it look like garbage. Do we all remember the 3D HFR Hobbit movies? I only saw the 2D video releases at 24fps, and they looked fine to me.

Well, let's not forget that RED cameras can make very nice images,

I don't think that is in question.

What is being questioned is allegedly fraudulent claims on the design, manufacture, build, performance and testing on some of their products.
Red appear to be doing exactly what they claim some less expensive 3rd party accessory makers are doing.
However the 3rd party memory card makers appear to be more honest about what they are doing than than Red.

This is about trust and business reputation not picture quality.
Reputation is hard to build but easy to loose.

This is likely to make many users look at the higher price original brand accessories for many other brands after this just in case they are "doing a Red" I wonder how many are getting nervous?
R&D does cost money, time (ie money) and resources (ie money) It costs a LOT less to cop... er be in spired by.... some one else's kit. Hence 3rd part stuff costing less. The difference is in the levels and quality of not just the physical items but the service and company ethos.

Not being a RD user I have no dog in this fight.

His comment was about an opinion that came about from a light discussion about the video on the last page...nothing to do with the media conversation.

Exactly. I've been on the fence about buying into the RED ecosystem for a few years. IMO the image quality is great when properly shot & edited. The cost was high and that was inhibiting, but I always thought the costs were justified. But now with this fraud scandal, and increasingly better offerings from Sony & Panasonic, I'm settled on not diving in. I'd rather give my money to companies that respect their customers.

This line of thinking opens a different can of worms. The photo-video companies from Japan have rather unorthodox relations with each other that might be frowned upon in different jurisdictions if examined closely. The main reason for Red's entry into this business was due to the Big Four Japanese companies leaving too much space in the bang-for-the-buck department.

And that's something that exists today also. Unfortunately for Red, advances in the imaging technology are nearly squeezing the existing digital high end out.
