GH4 the "Derrick Threatt" GH4 HDR settings for best Dynamic Range

It was good and bad, but none of the bad was related to the camera. The bad was that it was a museum exhibit with lots of young extras so really chaotic, in a large room full of overhead lights including a mix of fluorescent and tungsten, some had green and orange gels and lots of stuff going on not related to my shoot polluting the venue. I actually had a guy working on a door hinge that wouldn't stop for 10 minutes so I could get a few wide shots without some moron drilling into the wall in the background.

The good - love the look of your profile. I'm reviewing the footage I shot and it looks really good. I didn't have an external monitor because I forgot to get a micro HDMI, the 5d3 was mini HDMI (I think I have the correct names) so none of my cables work on the GH4. I didn't know there was a smaller HDMI connection than the one on the 5d3. I had to rely on the LCD for focus, which is always really nerve racking for me. But the image looks great, the room had some hot spots and some areas that were really dark and nothing looks really harsh. Thanks again for sharing, it's now C1 on my cam.

I'ill try to post some screen caps on Monday.

Looking forward to seeing it!!!

I really like the look of the one above. Yep. I was hearing raising pedestal added noise.

I've been using my Master Pedestal at +15. Very little noise, with most of it being on indoor shots. Crushing the blacks a tiny bit in post completely rids the image of nastiness.

dthreatt,

Great looking natural footage. can you tell us what settings you revised from the RC project footage?

thanks in advance!

dt, that's a great edit !!! from someone who knows enough to be dangerous with one of those things, your images really "work" !!!

I've been shooting cineV, 16-235 and all zeros to end up with the most efficient work flow possible from the GH4. I'm finding it is giving me the cleanest output not having to move it around in post. I keep getting muddier colors with cineD when adjusting the curves so much.

have you done the same test with cineV to compare?

Ive never tried Cine-V

dthreatt - are you setting your WB bias (A:2 M:2) based on that 5200K setting or using it as an overall bias? BTW, just started testing your settings vs everyone else's and it is really nice out of the camera. I think very little grading needs to occur on it.

Adam Wilt's test shows a great deal as far as a sound point of departure is concerned: and that, to me, is Cine D.

"Only CINE D is a standard, Rec.709-style gamma…. it looks like the camera is stretching shadows a fair bit, pushing midtones higher and progressively compressing highlights in every style other than CINE D."

"Compressing highlights", not what we want when highlight texture/detail/separation is important

Yes thats based on the 5200K. Yes. I doesnt really need grading. Its pretty good out the cam.
