Perhaps I'm oblivious or behind the curve, but...
If you're like me, you think 2.35-to-1 looks great, and you apply a mask to your 1920x1080 footage to make this happen.
I think it would be brilliant and not very difficult for Canon to offer 2.35-to-1 as a mode, and increase the horizontal resolution. As it is, 1920x1080 (2073600 total pixels) uses about one-third of a 7D's horizontal pixels; why not take 2209x940 (2076460 total pixels) and offer better horizontal resolution at a nearly identical bitrate?
Whatever programming they need to do to sample different pixels has already been done, in the tragically discarded digital zoom feature of the t3i.
It would be wonderful to have 2.35-to-1 footage blow up cleaner on a big screen, no?
