The catastrophy we dont want to happen with the firmware!!

I guess it will not happen but I was wondering:

A lot of people are throwing themselves on the 7D while the AGC is still an issue.

Magic Lantern absolutely needs a firmware update from Canon to be able to reverse engineer the software and get in the code to hack it.

We don't know if canon will make that update anytime soon. It could be in 6 months. So we could be stuck with a 7D without any sweet option magic lantern had for the 5D. ( dont talk about beachtech saving the day, it's noisy compared to juicedlink)

Am I the only one to see the iceberg?

You should never buy any product that doesn't do what you want, as-is. If you're buying something thinking that it doesn't do what you want, but someday maybe it will, then you're asking for trouble.

I hope for a magic lantern firmware fix as well, but I'm not counting on it. The solution to the AGC is to budget for an external sound recorder like a Zoom H4N.

You need to just run a dual system for audio. Film makers do it...it's the norm not the exception. Sure it would be nice to have good audio on there to begin with, but I just synced up a wedding I did with the 5D and the Zoom H4 recorder...it's not that hard.

Dual systems can actually be much easier to use, I like not having a mic tethered to the camera. If you want a cinema camera that does everything you want you'll need to buy one.

Syncing up the audio and video in post is not what I'd call an iceberg. More like having chilly watter running down your back because you got caught on deck without a hat while it was raining.

If you need audio and video synced automatically every time in order to meet your deadlines, then maybe a regular camcorder is a better choice than a VDSLR - HMC40 with the audio pod, HVX, XHA1, EX1, or a mid-size camcorder with an accessory box.

What's the big draw of the 7d? Great-looking and post-friendly image quality plus interchangeable lenses. The audio quality is just basic, same way the 12 minute record time per clip is not ideal for some kinds of shooting. It's versatility is somewhat limited, but that's how you get such a nice image acquisition system for cheap.

Just pretend it's a film camera and has a handy cheap microphone that the shooter can use to mutter 'not sure about that focus' and suchlike (which you'll find surprisingly useful at edit time).

Ouch! ( I am looking at myself syncing at 1 am my 2 hours of rushes). At least with the Zoom H4n, when comes the time Magic Lantern actualy hacks this little baby, I will be able to have a output directly in the cam. If I can see that as a compensation.

That seems like a great plug-in... There is something to be said for having it all self-contained but then again sometimes it's not so great too.

PluralEyes looks excellent and looks like a pretty much ideal solution for the dual-system chore. It's only available for FCP right now, but they're beta-testing Vegas support and I've asked them to support CS4.1 and EDIUS too...

For the one man band, it's certainly a drag, and I agree Magic Lantern will make it easier - though I say you should still record double system because the onboard preamps on these cameras are not that great, they're the audio equivalent of a little 1/6" CCD that does interlaced :-)

But syncing is really not all that painful, especially if you use a slate. I quite enjoy it, actually.

I see myself telling the lead signer I interview: wait just a sec, OK CAMERA ROLLING! CLAP! ACTION!!!!

Wait! I am in the back stage of a show with the signer of a band asking for his impressions. I am not in Australia with Peter Jackson shooting District 9 sequel : The Whale nation settles a refugee camp in Perth because the sea is polluted.

you're overbloating the situation. I sync right now, I shoot bands and concerts. For the most part, I dont clap and don't have time. I either suck it up and spend the 2 minutes syncing it up or I have the audio from my H4n feeding line in into my cam, then lining it up from there.

No iceberg Loic,
been dealing with AGC on the GH1 for months now, I already mentioned all of this to you in the emails.
Without a firmware hack the way forward is 2 system audio with H4 or beachtek x5d with the agc disabler.
Juiced link is useless because it doesn't disable agc

Er... so why not use a proper video camera for that purpose?

When you get a Peak at what HDSLR can do, you cannot go back to regular Video cameras. That's why when the 7D came out I thought : great! With the Magic Lantern Firmware I can finally have in between gh-1 and 5D, sound sync!

That's very funny!

A single system icebreaker is probably the Beachtek DXA-5D which has ACG control override.

Cost of solution $379.

You also get the benefit of dual XLR inputs and VU meters.

According to the Beachtek website, this also is compatible with the Panasonic GH1.

how many takes is one of those interviews? one i assume? maybe two? that takes around 30 seconds to sync up without a slate, is that really a problem in post? narrative work with a few hundred takes just to create a couple of minutes of footage, that's a challenge, and that's when you use a slate. this said i didn't use one on my d90 feature. 40 hours synced up manually by eye and ear. took me three days but it was a great excuse to actually watch most of the footage, something i usually hate.
