"the box"

Nice stuff you got going here Edgen. I feel you on taking care of kids on set. It was all I could do to get my older sister to stop babbling long enough to get the shots. Great BTS. I'm intrigued about the story and looking forward to seeing it.

How've I missed your thread.

Looking forward to your slick aesthetic. Can always tell your posters. Etc.

"the box" a title rife with Serlingesque possibilities :)

Justin -

Nice work. Tristan is a hoot! I love him in his cowboy hat. He was hard to hear/understand at times, but not during critical moments, so it didn't bother me. I loved the big brother/little brother banter, too. I'm sure that guy wanted to be anywhere but babysitting his kid brother. Great ending - an homage to the power of a child's imagination.

Kind of a spoiler here:

If you make another film with a lost child/neglectful caregiver storyline again, I'm gonna wonder if you have some parental anxieties you are working out! :)

Justin,

Love the short man! I always really enjoy your work... I loved the ending... good stuff. Both actors did a great job as well, especially the kid... how did you manage to keep him from looking into the lens?! Excellent.

One comment, I felt the story dragged a bit for me... it would have been cool to throw some more hints our way during the short... like maybe some of the magical glitter is on his hat or something? I don't know, just some ideas... regardless the story worked wonderfully as a short... great score as always too :)

I liked this one alot- I can't really point out exactly what, but the shots just sort of clicked for me. They felt very "indie 16mm short" film. I can't really explain, but your color, light, and composition just did it for me. Besides that, the only issue I really had with it was that I thought the guy was the kid's father until nearly the very end where the word "brother" is said...perhaps I wasn't paying attention closely enough tho. I actually expected it to end when it cut to black as he entered the box, but you actually showed the imaginary reality, which was completely unexpected, at least for me. Good job, I enjoyed it!

Great job Justin. I've said it before; your films multiply in quality with each new one. I feel a common motif from your work starting to form. It's like, guy in apartment, mind on other things, neglects kid. Only in this one it turns out to be a good thing. Or does it? Where is the little guy? Was he eaten by trolls in this mystical world?

It's eerie because the beauty of the world that the box transports one to could be a front for something much more sinister.

Everything was so natural and flowing. That kid can act, and I suspect that somehow you got him NOT to act, but to just be. However you did it, (and please do tell) it was awesome.

The tension towards the box was great, even though the dad didn't really care about it, you made me wonder. The score was excellent too. I don't know how you do all these films and your own. Amazing!

Enjoyed the film. The score and mix where the strongest part for me...and is that kid cute or what? Story dragged for me, but picked up nicely and ended on a really cool high note.

Great job.

That was great. That score you had was superb. I thought the kid was adorable and knew his stuff. At points in the middle it did start to drag but it picked right back up the and what an ending! You really captured the Twilight Zone theme.

What a treat.. Very well done... Jeffrey...Did an awesome Job. The score was a 10!! Who did it?

Thank you everyone for the kind words about "the box".

once the fest is over, i'll post some more bts with the green screen and after effects work. :)

in the mean time, Keep the crits coming!

loved the ants in the first shot. It must have been very difficult to get good sound from the kid but u pulled it out. I like how the first time the kid disappears, he comes back. i didn't care for some of the older brother's dialog but everything worked as a whole.

I'm glad it didn't turn into a dead kid from the past movie. Great effects work.
Strong piece and one of my favorites.

P.S. and of course it has great music!:)

Justin, you gotta stop putting kids in danger in your films, you give me a heart attack every time. This looked really great. Loved the ants crawling on the wall. And I really enjoyed the green screen work at the end. How time intensive was that? Tristan was superb! I could never get my kids to do that. The only critique I would have is that it was a bit slow to get to the action, you might have cut a bit of that part before he goes to sleep and he wakes up panicked. Just my 2 cents. It looked really good, great work!

best,

Jon
