The BIGGEST question of all....HVX200A

Barry_Green said:
Will there be an HVX200A? Probably, if the DVX is any measure to judge by. The big question is when -- probably at least a year, probably more. There was a full year from the DVX100 to the DVX100A, and almost two years between the DVX100A and the DVX100B. So don't expect to see an HVX200A anytime soon, I'd guess it'd be late 2007, maybe 2008 before there's an HVX200A.

I'm guessing that time frame is about right but that, instead of HVX200-B, we'll be looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of 10k for a HVX300 with 1/2" chips . . .

Cool, huh?

The ultimate icing on the cake would be if panasonic threw in a free 2gb p2 card with the barebones hvx, just way people could try out p2 and see if its for them and eventually get hooked.

Unlikely? Yes. Can I dream? Who can stop me!

And on a side note, I really hope Panny offers a few different packages to choose from,

HVX + one 4 GB card
HVX + two 4 GB cards
HVX + one 8 GB card
HVX + two 8 GB cards

and

HVX + nachos

We talked to Panasonic and the only package that is available (as we all know) is the 2 X 8 gig P2 card. They aren't excited about the 4 gig P2 cards in the HVX200 because you can't do much in 1080i with them. They are pushing the 8 gig cards because they want the best for everybody.

The package for two 4GB cards didn't save much over buying the HVX and one 8GB card anyway... and it's obviously better to have only one card to deal with (and a free slot available) in the long run. I was never really excited about that.

The 2gb card can handle HD, it just has slower transfer rates.
I was just going by Chris Hurds information at http://www.p2info.com/articles/misc/p2cardcaps.php which says:

"P2 cards come in two flavors; there's the S-series for standard definition video which have a data transfer speed of 320mbps, and the H-Series for DVCPro HD which have a data transfer speed of 640mbps. I'm not too concerned with S-Series cards as they're not compatible with the DVCPro HD recording capabilities of the new Panasonic AG-HVX200 camcorder, so this chart details only the recording capacities of various H-Series cards."

The only 2GB P2 card that was ever available was an S-Series card, so with that knowledge, I don't think that the 2 GB cards are capable of handling HD. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I asked Jan if the 2GB card could be used to record HD and she said "sure -- it'll just offload at half the speed, but it can record it fine."

That is what we are hoping for, and also I have been told other mfrr's are working round the clock to come out with their own drives too. I hope there will be some options come Xmas. Boy, I have put off vacation time and all that in chomping eagerness for that camera. So many backburner projects will rise from the grave! :)

The only advantage I can see to the 2 x 4GB cards is that you can keep shooting with one while one lays off to HDD. If shot filmstyle, it's like a 400' mag in 720p. You just have to recalibrate your mindset and think like you're shooting 35mm.

Sorry SPZ, but Panny still hasn't released a bulletin for those yet. :embarasse I will post when I have info.

2GB P2 would be a nice freebee with the HVX! Maybe I could shoot 30sec. of 1080i

As for the Firestore....I didn't even think about it connecting via the P2 port....now that would be cool!

I wonder how long P2 will go on. Will it die out by 2008,2009, or earlier for a newer version or will it still remain? Will the final capacity be 100gb? Or will it be less?

Not that I would steer anyone away from P2, but I'm just wondering how long this camera could last us for. Either way, I'm gettin' one!!!!!!!!!!!! =D

Any reason to assume a next generation HVX would be completely tapeless?
If P2 is all it claims to be: I would like to see panasonic drop the tape drive all together.
I would wait to purchase such a camera if it would happen in the next year.

The future of P2 development and capacity is tied directly to the growth of SD cards which sits firmly in the hands of technology companies. As such, I'm pretty sure that P2 will see massive capacities and reduced prices moving along very nicely. How long ago was it that 128 meg SD cards were the hottest thing? And then 256? The last SD memory card I bought was for my wife's camera. Cost? 60 bucks. Capacity? 1 Gig. And now they've got affordable 2 Gig SD cards.

My Canon Optura 30 shipped with a completely useless 8 meg SD card. Now at some point that 8 meg SD card must have been hot stuff. At that time I bet there were people speculating about the maximum future capacity of SD cards. 100 times as much? 800 megs! Impossible! :)

So while I can't say that P2 will fly or die (that's based on Panasonic's commitment, pricing, expectations and other business issues), I'm absolutely positive that any demise of the line would NOT be tied to low capacity.

The camera will have 8 Gig cards available in December, and I'd be surprised if 16 Gig cards aren't available around next summer. I think once we get the 16 Gig cards the HVX will become attractive to an expanded audience. And with every P2 increase, a new audience will step in. I bet the 32 Gig cards will make succesfull wedding videographers take notice. Over an hour of continuous shooting in 1080i/P with ZERO drop out issues. Or if the customer is paying for standard video only, imagine shooting 4 hours of DV on the P2 cards. And then you don't have to waste another 4 friggin' hours to capture it to your computer!!! I may never even own a P2 card, but I can see the workflow advantages with high capacity cards.

Good times (better if you have money to actually buy of course).

Are there any other manufactures of P2 cards right now? Nothing against Panasonic, but competition brings down prices!

It'd actually be over two minutes of 1080i, and over four and a half minutes of 720/24p. Two minutes isn't a lot, but I used to shoot on an Eyemo where an entire load of film was sixty seconds, so two minutes would be luxurious by comparison!

And 4.5 minutes? That's as long as the longest load of film my 35mm Konvas can take, a 400' magazine. So a 2gb card could be worked with...

WOW, actually that's more than I thought, I could afford the 2GB P2....maybe :undecided

I guess I could carry a Powerbook around with me!

P2 card growth may happen way, way faster than anyone was anticipating. 32gb SD cards could be on the market next year -- that would mean 128gb P2 cards may happen in 2006! Probably not until 2007, I would guess, but the potential at least exists!

which brings us back to the original HVX200A title of the thread. it is, of course, going to be a tape-free model
funny though.. talking about a continuos model for a camera that does not really exisit . . .
p.s.
selling my beloved DVX100(no A) in 2 days! start saving for the big baby ;)
