The BFG9000

I assure you indeed its an accessory.

You dont need it to mount the LCD... there will be holes for mounting on the top of the camera, where the cage bolts onto.

As for power.. the battery and drive that can be mounted off the back, can be mounted on the bottom or top of the camera. There is also a RED FLASH on camera so you can get around even needing the drive.

Dont be too criticle on mounting points, because remember the body is still in development, but imagine this below with perhaps a battery plate on the bottom of the camera.. thats all you need to go record.

Wow, now thats news. I was worried there for a second.

I'm surprised about the concern for the look of the Red camera with the cage. If it has a lense and a matte box- I think most people with get that it's a camera. Not to mention the crew around, the flags, c-stands, etc. Now as far as design- couldn't most shoulder mounted cameras with a long lense be confused with an affensive military machine. I remember reading about camera men being shot during combat. Mistaken Identity.

I like what I'm seeing and I think it will suit my production needs just fine. And; as Jarred mentioned, can be stripped down to near-undecent. Sounds versitile.

I too think it's silly to make a camera badass looking. The word I'm looking for here is exactly that: silly. Obviously, the designers are not much interested in the documentary genre. It's a little dissapointing to me that while so well thought, the camera misses this important point. Like, isn't it hard enough to get people not to behave unnaturally in front of your cameras?

It's something that makes me wonder if marketing is becoming more important than filmaking, for this particular product.

I agree. But, what I'd like to see is an image of how the base camera with battery, LCD, EVF and drive mounted to the camera itself looks. Personally I like the look of the base camera, but I'm not sure about the cage and accessories. On the upside, you could tell the actors that if they don't give you what you want you'll shoot them - literally (and then point to RED).

The one design thing that keeps bothering me is the RED logo on the camera. That's just silly. Why do I need to concern myself with a red reflection on a shot ?

I know it's branding, but maybe just a subtle Red logo inlay somewhere ? However, the design process is ongoing, so maybe they'll address some of these things.

your kidding right? Have you ever looked at an ARRI camera? The logo is bigger than the entire damn red camera lol.. If RED ends up shipping without a logo on the camera i will give you my reservation ( its #10). That would be the stupidest thing a company could ever do.

Remember, that red ball in the front, once you put a 35mm lens on the camera, nevermind the mattebox, gets blocked from the lens...

Ahh now you've done it. I was resisting the temptation of modelling this new design up in Cad and mocking up a few ideas I had... now my whole weekend is shot - Any other requests on design ideas while I'm at it? hehe.

any chance you could mount a hood ornament on it?

Example: Here

LOL, I'm not good at modelling organic stuff. Maybe I can pull off a 1942 dodge hood ornament.

Haha. Nope. Not kidding.

It's not the size of the logo, it's the placement and the fact that it lights up (unless I got that wrong).

Notice it's similar size to RED. Imagine, what would be the consequences of doing close up shooting, when there was a small red light on front. Make the logo as big as you want on the side. But colour and light right beside a lens (pointing) near a subject matters.

You're right, with lens, mattebox, filters etc... that you probably wouldn't see it. But with smaller lenses, handheld (like the 1st pic), you would.

Personally, I just feel it's superfluous , and a logo on the side would suffice. But that's just my opinion. I'm not saying it's a make or break it thing, just a minor quibble. I'll either pop it off, or tape over it (if it lights up). call me crazy

And CVB I would LOVE if you would do a mockup.

Edit : I've always like the Ferrari horse, or the Rolls Royce Lady. Maybe we could put one of those on the camera ?

Cameramen in the Middle East quickly learn not to carry their tripod on their shoulder, or risk getting shot. I agree with the earlier poster "Ranger" - it would not be "unreasonable" for the average Joe-Blow to look at this camera and wonder if it was a weapon of some sort.

There was a case where I live of a cop who responded to a disturbance call with possible weapons involved. He came into the hallway of the dingy hotel, and somebody stepped into the hallway with a waterpistol. The cop shot him dead. Their was a huge public outcry. My feeling was for the cop: if someone points something at me, I have fractions of a second to respond to save what I "perceive" as a threat on my life. If it's going to be me or him, then it's going to be me if I have anything to say about it.

This is, of course not directly relevant, but in these heightened times, perception is important.

I understand where your coming from.. and thank god for camera tape.

As for it lighting up.. theres a red light on the front of most video cameras, and its selectable to off in most of them.. so hopefully red will do the same.

Exactly Jarred, I'm sure there will be a toggle on/off function in the menus for the light up RED emblem. I love that thing, please don't remove it. :costumed-smiley-047

Don't take the logo off. Make a on/off menu option and then on top of that I would love if you could use it as a tally light. Even though most the time you couldn't see it behind the lense or mattbox it still would be cool.

I know, I know... show me an image of a RED camera that does look like a camera and I'm happy. Show me what the camera can look like without the cage in a "ready to shoot" setup, and maybe I'll ease on the guys. I love the concept of the camera, but it truly looks even more menacing than a regular camera (that already is incredibly dangerous). Yesterday I shot a documentary, pretty light mooded about one of the local neighbourhoods, and shot some stuff inside one of the local slums. I saw many many unfriendly drug dealers or soldiers looking at me, weapon volume obvious under their shirts telling me not to record their picture. And I was escorted by the local slum leadership. I just can't imagine doing that with this RED, shown in their picture...

Anyway, I want a camera to make money, I want sunglasses to look good. I can care less about how ("cool") my camera looks, I only want it to work and not let me down. My sunglasses, on the other hand, I can care less about how they work, because I only want them to look good. It's why they're there. But, if they feel they must design the camera this way, that's what it's going to be. Anyway, marketing is marketing, that's why we're discussing this here, and it really doesn't matter to me. I don't make money on RED sales, so they should do as they please, I'm sure they are bound to get many things right, and maybe this is one of them. But ask me if I find the RED design pretty. No. If I find it smart. Yes and no. If I find it marketable. Yes.

Ask me I'd rather something that looks like an ARRI 235, or an Aaton XTR. To each their own.

Cheers!

RED CAGE etc

RED CAGE etc

The RED CAGE is flexible enough to be added to, or deleted in pieces, so that an "ENG" style camera - and by the way I think that we probably need to define what we mean by an ENG v's EFP camera - can be easily constructed. And wiith a lens and a follow focus added to that, I bet that your shoulder mounted ENG / EFP RED camera will look an awful lot like an ENG/EFP camera with a lens and a follow focus, balanced on your shoulder.

Maybe its our bad for not showing explicit examples of an ENG / EFP style configuration, but with these components its pretty easy to re-construct a classic ENG/EFP layout with EVF, shoulder pad, internal media slot, and a compact rail / battery mount system.

In summary, we are still in development, and we honesty value your feedback. But as Jim has often commented, the design sees adjustments on a very frequent basis; dont take what you see as definitive, final. Rather it is guidance as to the final product direction. We have already solved very many difficult design issues with this camera, and with your help there is no reason that we cannot optimize the rails and cage concepts for virtally any shooting application.

so now maybe my dreams of a Flamethrower or some sort of "death beam" on my DVX can be realised in red....

I thought it already had a flame thrower.
