The best way to shoot music videos?

I am sure some of you have seen my music video works. [http://BrandonDull.com] I think about it everyday that I am so excited when I am editing the music video to release it - when I release it I think its the most horrible thing & anyone can shoot/edit the way I did. I am not sure how to achieve the best quality on the HVX200a because I color correct to deep in editing. I know when I am shooting I am supposed to get the best color image possible so when I go to edit, I just put the timeline together & do color correcting tweaks but it's not happening that way. I am mostly shooting around 10am during the day since I don't have access to lighting kits. Although I would like to know the best way to shoot with lighitng kits using the hvx200a. The main thing is I set my camera at 1080HD 30fps on the default scene file : F1. My gain is off. I white balance. I put on the ND filter but feel like I can never set that right with my iris around 2.8 - 4.0. I basically just need some professional advice to get the best look for my music videos. I tried doing it my way and people like my work but I want the most I can get at industry quality using 1080HD.

Thanks,
Brandon

Just a few suggestions.

- If you are going to do a mix tape type video, mix it up. Have the musician rap in some cool places other than behind that water back drop. Your composition is also kinda flat. Have the dudes move around instead of just standing in a line next to a wall. Create some depth to the image.

- Light the scene. The hvx under low light looks like crap. If you are going indoors, use some lights. If it is a music video, you have a ton of creative control to make a cool lighting setup.

- It seemed like you were shooting on the wider side of the lense. Back up and zoom in to mix up the shots with some shallower DOF.

thanks Jim.. I already have looked into that. I had the loaded scene files before on my camera but then reformatted it back because I want to shoot the my subject in the best way possible using the default scene file so I can have more options when I go into the editing process with color.

Hard to see without seeing original, but image quality looks fine except for a bit video like. 24P could help. Also, camera angles are too similar - you are usually at face level. Shoot down from a bridge, up from pavement level, etc to give it some variety. Try handholding with stabilzation on, shoot from waist level and give the camera a twist as you shoot.

Get a dolly and use the hell out of it.

+1

A love of what you do is great, I too get that "horrible thing & anyone can shoot/edit the way I did" feeling. Ususally it's because I've been working on the project for a long time and am blinded by how it looks. Get a fresh perspective and 9/10 times the new set of eyes will either love it, or provide some very valuable feedback.

Also, bear in mind that imitation is the best form of flattery. Whilst I'm not suggesting you rip off Mobb Deep, try to incorporate some shots from stuff you really like.

Good luck.
