The best way to finish a film.

so there is a locked final cut of the film i shot, and need to do some color correction and output to HDCAM and Digi beta for exhibition. obviously i am in on the session.

what is the best way to do this? i do need some power windows and fine tweaking but on the cheap...but there is some money in the budget. any advice?

thanks.

Power windows, a circle or square you can use to single out a specific area of the image to do color work.

Have you looked at Color in Final Cut Studio 2? It has everything you'll need, except the professional coloring training. But if you're on a budget, get the Apple Pro Training Series: Color book, and the APTS: Encyclopedia of Color Correction, it'll teach you everything you need to know technically about color work.

If you are really on the cheap, rent a deck, and use Compressor to convert your DVCPRO-HD footage to the formats you need.

But a good professional service such as CineFilm in Atlanta or some such would be your best bet, if you have the money.

If you have COLOR, use that. Or you can use After Effects. You pretty much don't want to master in your NLE in 8bit, even if you shot on MiniDV. Use 32bpc (or 16 but i prefer 32).

If you use COLOR, you get the benefit of, "real time," plus scopes. AE will give you scopes if you have a plugin like MB Looks (RGB Scopes) or Color Finesse.

If you edited in FCP, you might as well use COLOR, as it will be the easiest program to get your movie into.
