Hi,

What the best system lens for gh1?
Canon fd, nikkor ais, c mount lens, Minolta?

I have 1000 $ for buy set lens

thanks

I went with Nikon, because I already had a couple and there are plenty of options and the quality tends to be high.

For $1,000.00 you could get a really nice set of vintage Nikon primes. Or you could get a set of Minolta Rokkors and have enough left over to buy a used car. There's no right or wrong answer. There are lots of Canon FD users here who love them, and they tend to be a little cheaper than the Nikkors but more expensive than the Minoltas.

Decide what lengths you must have, and research what's available in each of these lines. I'd avoid the C-mount, because you'll get vignetting at wide lengths and some don't seem to fit as well as others in the mount. C-mount users may want to chime in here.

I am going FD mount for my 30something and 50mm... I usually use canons for pictures and have a few lenses lol @ Ron.

I may go Nikon or others, adapters are cheap enough to get anything you want really.

I think AIS Nikkor buy the following:
- 24mm F2 OR 2.8
- 35mm F2
- 50mm F1.4

Are not there better options for the money I have? The Zeiss is more expensive...

Thanks for the comments.

Get F-Mount (Nikon/Nikkor) because there is a huge collection of cheap used ones out there, and you're relatively future proof. When Nikon and third party companies come out with new lenses for the system you can buy them too if you really want them. Nobody is making new FD lenses! And by their nature you will have some way of controlling aperture, whether with a bolt adaptor or with a ring on the lens (not all of the new ones have rings but again, bolt adaptor.)

I agree with MadHMC about mixing it up. You don't HAVE to get all of one brand. That sounds like a good start abcjean. I have used my Nikkor 28mm f2.8 a LOT, and I would probably even like it better if it were a 24. The 35 f2 is on my purchase list. I think it might just be the sweet spot for interviews.

Also, don't forget about the Lumix 20mm f1.7. That's a great lens to have in your kit. You might even have enough money left over to buy a decent Nikon mount zoom with an adapter.

Unless you want to get some Zeiss glass, in which case you will blow through your money much quicker. But the glass will rule. Or so I have read (to quote Spinal Tap).

The Lumix 20mm f/1.7 is AWESOME. Just be aware that it makes a bit of noise when manually focusing so isn't the best where sound from near the camera is critical.

I would consider that a long portrait lens but on the GH1 I suppose it's more telephoto. It's a great lens yes.

Just out of curiousity... Would it be a bad idea to buy a canon fd 17mm f4 lens for wide shots? I don't have kit lens and I will be shooting with lights. Has any one have experience with the lens? Barrel distortion?

The GH1 corrects distortion with its own lenses at wider angles. Sorry I don't really know, but I can't imagine there wouldn't be distortion with the canon fd.

The 17mm f/4 Canon FD doesn't have much distortion and you're shooting through the sweet spot anyways - but for the money I'd get the Olympus 17mm f/2.8 pancake (used) instead.

Would I need an adapter to use the Olympus 17mm? Also, do you think the canon fd and olympus have the sort of same image "look"? Can you tell difference? Thanks for replies guys.

Thanks Ben and thisisapocalypse. I think I'm going to purchase one. One more question. Do you guys notice a difference between the 17mm and 20mm focal length? Extra stop of light or wider better?
