The best settings for an xha1?

Hi guys

This is a very very broad setting. I'm just intreguied to see what other people are shooting and export etc on their XH's. I want to get the absolute best out of my 2.

Also I bumped into another XHA1 user the other week who was shooting without 24f on and saying that this 60i was easier and that he could convert after. What are people's views on this? I feel like im not quite getting 100% hd out of my videos especially online, please take a look at this and tell me if im just being overly picky.

Hi Ryan. Here's what I think most A1 owners have done .. set the camera to about 3-4 custom presets then tried each one while reading through the forums to find others preferences and ask questions.

Some like different results to others and a lot depends on what you're shooting .. there's no free lunch I'm afraid especially with the Canon A1.

Your Art of Fishing looks good especially after reading your brief. A little constructive criticism .. it could do with some 100% sound effects right from the start.

Just the music makes it too divorced from the people in the company .. a voice over would help even more. Sound is 70% of what you see and there, everyone would be looking to see and hear themselves on the screen.

TIP: I was a moderator on the Panasonic3CCDuser site for 6 years .. don't ask too many questions in the one post it puts people off. HTH :)

1) Converting from 60i or 30p is time consuming, labor intensive and often doesn't work well. If you want 24p shoot in 24f. Otherwise you're likely to have stutter or artifacts.

2) There seem to be two main approaches to color with the A1. Default mode a a few presets have a flat color palette to attempt to preserve dynamic range. It works to a point, but again is time consuming. People shooting movies with lots of time to CC shoot this way.

If you're a one man band, or have deadlines, or want a baked in look, people often shoot with a preset. There are well over 40 popular and semi popular compiled presets for the A1. Generally people use these to get decent dynamic range, but more saturated colors (TrueColor, Panalook2, NaturalO, etc) or a specialed FX look, like Bleach Bypass or Sepia.

3) Your camera can only hold 9 and 6 are locked in, so you can only try 6 at a time. Experiment, you'll also learn what the settings really mean.

4) Vimeo and youtube seem to recompress so don't expect great results with either. The old advice was to upload 720p with H.264 compression. Now you can upload 1080p, but in reality it doesn't seem better unless you download the original file.
