The best computers for editing Canon DSLR video

CS5 on a dell laptop Studio 1557, Intel i7 1.60GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI HD 4570 (~$1000) and I can edit files straight from the 7D in real time. I couldn't do it without CS5 though.

Thanks to everyone who replied so far. And to clarify, I did not intend for this to be a PC vs Mac thread. If you have a Mac that does the job I described in my first post then by all means list it here so that myself and others shopping for a new computer can consider it.

It's interesting to hear how many non I7 systems are able to handle the Canon raw files... I was thinking only an I7 would do it. Also good tips about the NVIDIA cards... some of the systems I was looking at have ATI but I guess I'll stay away from them until they start showing up on Adobe's recommended list (since I think I'll be going with CS5).

I'm running an Quad-Core (one generation down from an i7) 2.66GHz overclocked to 3.2 and I don't have any problems.

I can even be functional on a Dual Core 2.53GHz laptop proc.

I use a quad core q6600 non-overclocked, 4 gigs ram, premiere pro cs5 and Nvidia GTX 260.

I dropped 8 layers of effects such as curves etc. and 7D raw file plays smoothly with 40% CPU and 50% video card running.

I would say get at least a quad core, 8 gigs ram and something like a GTX 260 to process the fx once you apply the Nvidia hack it will play back smooth.

I dont see a need to upgrade to an i7 if i use premiere cs5.
I'll upgrade my ram and upgrade to whatever comes after the i7.

A generic quad core pc with 6 gigs of ram, a 2 gig video card, 2 1TB ESATA HDs, running 64-bit Windows 7 and Adobe Premiere CS5. You can get one for under 1,000 on ebay. No transcoding, no stuttering and super fast rendering.

I know because I have one and edit 7D footage with it everyday.

Popsiclestand, if you don't mind me asking, how'd you come across a computer like that. I've yet to see anything w/ those specs for under 1,000, is there any way you might be able to help me out w/ the search?

Just to let you know I had to add a second video card for my second monitor as my comp was having a hard time editing for long periods without image problems. This seems to have resolved it and haven't had a problem since. I have a 1gb 9800 and added a second 512mb 9800.

I got a AMD Phenom II 3.2ghz quadcore with 8gb ram and a bunch of other stuff for 500$ from craigslist and I've seen similar deals on ebay, craigslist, etc, etc. believe me the stuff is out there. I constantly see top notch quadcores like AMD phenom 9850 2.5 ghz quadcore for 300-400$ for the tower with 4-6gb ram if not more and 200-500gb hard drives.
just look, the deals are out there
