Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share some updates with you all. "The Behaviour of Houses" is a feature that has been in the works for a while now. We shot with one of the first DVX100's to land in Canada. The DoP was James Holloway, who I know lurks around here somethimes :) . Post production stayed 24p the whole way, and have delivered a 24p DVD for home video, a 24p DVD for screenings that won't take anything else, and a 60i DigiBeta with 3:2 pulldown for posterity/broadcast master/better screenings.

The latest good news: it has been accepted into the Slackers Film Festival!

I have included the press release below. More updates soon...

“THE BEHAVIOUR OF HOUSES” SELECTED TO SCREEN AT SLACKERS FILM FESTIVAL

Premiere Of Local Film Is A Perfect Fit In A Festival That Celebrates Movies Without Car Chases And Serial Killers

Toronto, Ontario – April 11, 2007

“The Behaviour of Houses”, the dramatic feature debut of Toronto director David W. Scott, has been selected to premiere at the first annual Slackers Film Festival. The screening on Friday, April 20 at 7pm, will be attended by the director. The Slackers Film Festival runs April 19 to 20 at Cineforum in downtown Toronto.

“The Behaviour of Houses” tells the story of Melinda, a struggling artist whose family develops suburban real estate. When her brother comes to visit, Melinda’s life is changed forever. How can Melinda, her lover and her brother deal with unfinished family business?

The premiere of “The Behaviour of Houses” at the inaugural Slackers Film Festival is a perfect fit. By celebrating films about people facing the drama of real life, the Slackers Film Festival creates a space for telling stories that don’t include car chases and serial killers.

Creating a very personal movie like “The Behaviour of Houses” was a labour of love for the production team, especially director David W. Scott. The film was shot and cut over a five-year period, in locations around downtown Toronto, the GTA and Windsor. Many supportive artists lent their skills to the production, including actors Matt Murphy, Sarah Title and Norm Owen in the leads. The musical soundtrack includes the director’s hometown heroes Honeymoon Suite, along with local talent Alan Lee, Ivor Stines and Dustin Peters.

Thanks for the love guys, much appreciated.

The Slackers Film Fest was a great experience. I attended the whole thing, watched a lot of movies and met some great people. Folks came in from across the US, and there was a big Toronto contingent. It felt good to have the film respected for its scale, instead of being panned for not having car chases or A-list cast.

So, next up is the theatrical release!

The Brunswick Theatre has opened in Toronto, and it's unlike any other theatre space in the city. It's in the space formerly known as The Poor Alex theatre, on Brunswick just south of Bloor. They screen a lot of documentaries, and are expanding into drama and other forms. One night they'll play a social-justice themed documentary, then the next night they'll host a grindhouse retrospective. The place is very respectful and engaging with its audience -- the owners moderate audience discussions of the films after each screening! Again, it feels like fortune has smiled on our film, because its exactly the kind of space and audience that "Behaviour" should connect with.

If anyone is in Toronto, please check out the screening and help make our film (and the Brunswick Theatre) a success. Here's the details from my press release:

“THE BEHAVIOUR OF HOUSES” OPENS IN TORONTO

Local Feature Film Will Play At Toronto’s Newest Cinema, The Brunswick Theatre

Toronto, Ontario – April 24, 2007

Fresh off its world premiere at the Slackers Film Festival, “The Behaviour of Houses” is opening for a three day run at The Brunswick Theatre. The film will screen on Thursday, May 10 at 7pm, Friday May 11 at 9:30pm, and Saturday May 12 at 6:00pm. The film is the dramatic feature debut of Toronto director David W. Scott. All screenings will be attended by the director, with audience discussion and Q&A following each show, in keeping with the spirit of the screening space.

The Brunswick Theatre, Toronto’s newest cinema, has a focus on issues of social justice, politics and the environment. “The Behaviour of Houses” tackles personal and political issues around suburban development, individual action and responsibility, and the role of the artist, the academic, and the private sector in addressing issues of the common good. The fit between the film and the screening space is a good one, with a shared sense of purpose.
