the AJ-PCS060 P2 Store Drive

Has anyone used this device- the Panasonic 60GIG P2 harddrive. Our production company is thinking about hardware upgrades. Currently we are using an older G4 laptop for field x-fer of P2.

We are currenlty trying to decide on either investing in a new MacBook Pro laptop with the soon to be released PCI to PCIX adapter and continue to post on or older G5 tower OR buy a soon to be realeased new Quadcore MACPro and the [SIZE=-1] AJ-PCS060 P2 Store Drive.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

I think the 60GB P2 store will be obselete in less than 2 years as the larger capacity cards roll out. If you can make it pay for itself with a year or so then go that route but after having used it in the field, I would much rather spend the money on renting extra cards when needed or continue using the G4 PB, which is what I do now. In your situation I think the best hardware upgrade would be the new quadcore macpro and a couple of 16gb P2 cards instead of the P2 store.

What about the Firefly....other alternative means?

I presume you mean the Firestore.
I think it to will eventually be relegated to the obselete bin as card sizes continue to increase. Although a lot of people swear by it at the moment there are a few things to consider. It is a spinning hard drive, it needs to be tethered to the camera by way of the 4 pin FW connector which has at times proven unreliable. It also requires power. If you are aware of it's pros and cons and it fits your needs it may be a good alternative for you.

I've used my P2 Store for about a year now. Excellent field solution. What would make it better (as P2 cards increase in capacity) would be for Panasonic to offer a larger upgradable drive . . . and if they don't I am sure someone else will eventually recognize that there is a market.
