Thailand trip

Hey guys,

Just finished the taster video from my Thailand trip earlier this month.

You can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pka5DCMuwZI

Just some back info... in Australia when you finish high school, it's tradition to go on a "schoolies" trip. This normally includes drinking, partying and other stuff like that... the trip I went on was an alternative to that.

All shots (except the time lapse with the motorbike) were shot on the t2i. Lens was a 35mm Zeiss (except the airplane shot. That was stock.)

Any feedback would be appreciated and taken on board... there might still be a couple of tweaks needed.

Well done. You had lots of great shots, a good editing pace, and the VO carried us through most of the trip explaining what we were looking at.

I'm curious what kind of camera support (tripod or otherwise) you used while there? How was traveling and hiking around with it? Did you bring a waterproof bag for the rafting shots?

i'm half way through it so far... seems nicely put together, looks and sounds good. Solid work all around. Thanks for sharing...

Thanks for the kind feedback :)

I used my miller tripod with the t2i on it for the majority of the shots (just to keep the shots looking steady and clean). The interviews and time lapses (and rafting) was all shot on the HVX202. For the rafting shots I used the EPIC water housing system.

Hiking with the tripod was a bit heavy, but I was there to film, so I needed to be ready to shoot at all times! Plus I wasn't going to the gym for the week, so that was my workout.

Sped up shots were using the 2fps hack as well.

Good work. Flows nicely.

I also think it's real marketable. I could see people being interested in a show like this. Good luck with it.

Thanks for that story2rewrite! I'm hoping to do more videos like this in the future if the options open up for me! I'd love to go to South America or Africa.

Really loved your work. great quality, peace, editing, music, VO ... whole package :) I wish I could do something with your style :)
Inspiring work.
thx 4 sharing

Really liked the video. Good pace, great shots and angles, editing, and overall nicely put together. Keep it up!

Hey young fella. Can someone tell me why this is the first time Im seeing this?

Anyway, what you have documented here is an interesting experience. And I agree you put it together neatly, well paced - comes across very "light entertainment" - sans getaway etc.

You have a good voice for voiceover work here in Australia - so if youre still studying get yourself a voice demo and get busy for some extra $$.

This is not ground breaking stuff but for someone who's just finished high school its great. And good to see some taking an alternate path to schoolies.

Wow, amazing work! What was your general set-up (besides the T2i and Miller sticks)? Lenses? Monitor (if any)? You got some beautifully exposed night shots. What were your settings?

Again, awesome stuff!

Set up wise for all the b-roll stuff, it was just me with my 550D and tripod. I used a Carl Zeiss 35mm lens for the majority of it, and the stock lens on the airplane. Interviews were all done on the HVX202 with a shotgun mic (which I just help and pointed at them). No monitor. Used the Epic Waterhousing unit for the rafting shots with my HVX as well. I think that's everything really. Edited in FCP6 and colour graded uses 3 way colour corrector. A couple of graphic shots done in After Effects as well.

Thanks for the feedback :) Really keen to do something like this again soon.

Very nice work. I LOVE Thailand, just spent the last three and a half months there myself - Chiang Mai primarily. Quick question, what exactly is the "2fps hack" you refer to? Your video looked great sped up. How did you do it?

EDIT :: I too edit in FCP6

The 2fps hack is with the HVX202 (or 200 if you're in NTSC regions). If you search for it on this forum there are threads about it... it allows you to get half second exposures to get streaky images in your video... or use it as a time lapse effect (which I did). To do the hack you just need to change a number in a scene file.
