GH2 Testing out the 1DX and the GH2

Went out this afternoon and grabbed a few shots to see how they look together. Not much of a comparison, but it may give a general idea of what kind of footage the 2 produce under similar circumstances.

nice footage. The gh2 def is much sharper. However the canon looks more filmic to me...maybe due to its softness.

To close to tell.... What I noticed is at higher iso's 1DX is cleaner/a lot less noise. Also GH2 looks sharper... Opinion? They both looks great and honestly I cannot say one looks better than the other.

Hmm, 1DX wasn't even on my radar up till now, but I agree - there is something about it. Very nice look to it.

I think everyone will like something different about each camera. One thing though, is that it's pretty easy to soften up the GH2's image to 1DX level and likewise not too hard to really sharpen up the 1DX image as well. I think they're both great cameras and I could easily see myself using either to be honest. Just depends on the look you're going for.

Let's be real though, the BMC trashes all these cameras outright.

Let's just say 1DX at 3200 iso is cleaner than 640 iso on the GH2. And you can go way way higher than that and have a usable image, it's pretty impressive.

Yup. That's pretty depressing seeing BMC footage!
Can't afford it!

Lol Roman. Just wait til you get your hands on Blackmagic. Trash is a very strong understatement.

I won't be buying a GH3 likely. Just keeping GH2 for slow mo. Blackmagic spoiled me to the point where I don't even want to shoot Epic...

Both footage looked really nice. But GH2 was the clear winner for me.

Would love to have funds for a BMC :( But would need at least 5 Grand to invest in SSD's and the works.

Quit it Kholi, I have to stay sane somehow. You know what holding the BMC in my hands would do to me? You think I want to spiral into a jealous insanity, relegating my GH2 as nothing more than a glorified helmet cam? I wouldn't wish that on anyone...

But seriously, I'll probably test it out sometime this weekend abouts. I imagine that will be a big mistake.

So what's the story on your end, did yours actually come in, or are you still borrowing one from time to time? That must drive you crazy since you've actually used it.

I'm still borrowing my friends, but actually it's fine. I'm waiting for MFT mount, that's one of the two "issues" I have with the camera and it's almost here, anyway. Now when MFT mount is shipping... then I might go crazy. xD

BMCC would require to change all of my rigging options due to it being a larger camera. Also the Raw workflow eats up more space than RED footage as I have been reading.....
More than likely GH3 is the camera I will be buying. BMCC as of now would require a very large investment by me which I currently cannot afford.

It's going to be hard to convince your clients to pay MORE because now you are using XYZ camera..... I guess you can find new ones?....

Ah, so you did decide to wait for the MFT, you'll probably thank yourself later I imagine. My overall impression from all the weekly updates from BM, is that there's just a couple issues they need to work through in the manufacturing workflow of their sensor supplier... once that's truly overcome, I can't see why the MFT won't be right on the heels of the EF. Who knows... maybe they have MFT bodies / mounts in production awaiting sensors as well.

Seriously, the overwhelming hype (well deserved hype), feels like it's hitting critical mass with just a few of us taunting the others with delicious raw footage. Just gotta start putting it out of my mind until I actually get one...

I'm tempted because there's nothing I own that couldn't be used with the BMCC: Lenses, tripod, Zoom H4n, Rode Mic, LEDs etc etc.
I never went down the rig route - I find them ridiculously overpriced for what they are.

The BMCC would fit just fine into my workflow. But it would probably kill my mac.

I should probably head over to the BMCC forums, but the issue that I can't ever find being explored is how the BMCC performs in low light - on its own and compared to the GH3. The GH3 is still rare enough out there that we can't directly compare, but the BMCC on its own? I realize that the DR is amazing, but how is it from low ISO on to high as you get less and less light - how is the DR at low light? What I really want is clean footage in low light.

Blackmagic's at least as solid as MK3 at a rating of 1600 ISO. With a very apparent edge in every image aspect short of a larger sensor and DOF (depending on glass), that means color, detail, etc.

If you're looking for a No Light king, that's the FS100. Low Light is pretty subjective, if you were asking me would I be confident enough to walk around with minimal lighting and some fast glassed Blackmagic, absolutely. And by that I mean a 1K Chimera, fistful of litepanels, a 650 and maybe a 300.

No light, again, is a completely different story though.

Thanks, Kholi. I guess that puts the BMCC in play for me. I'll test it when I'm closer to shooting, come March next year.
