GH2 Testimonial video shot on GH2

I've started producing some testimonial videos for my business. The first one was shot on the GH2 with a 25mm Leica 1.4 lens. I was using the SeaQuake patch. Also, the black and white sample footage was also shot with the same settings.

Editing was done in FCP X, color in Da Vinci Resolve and graphics/lower thirds in After Effects.

Thanks for the feedback.. As for the patch, I actually made a mistake on the original post, I am using AquaMotion. I tried out seaquake, but even on my $250 class 10 card I would occasionally get crashing issues. Plus to my eye I saw zero difference in quality between the two patches. I also tried out some others around the 44/mbps mark, which also looked good.. but finally decided on aqua motion because Gop1 was enticing to me... I am always trying to achieve more fluid motion with the GH2.. especially when panning.. the hack has helped marginally.

All in all though, I am by no means an expert on these patches. I know very little, and intend to leave it to the pros. I find for myself the biggest difference in quality of my work comes from spending time testing lighting techniques, setups, framing, etc. as 99.999% of anyone ever watching my footage would never care what patch I used, or notice any difference between them.

holy crap, da vinci resolve?!
How much did that cost you

Could you go into the settings you used and some of the main post work that had to be done? Superb work!

I use the software based version ($1000) for 90% of my colour work, and occasionally take it to a resolve color facility to finish with hardware when needed.

As stoneinapond mentioned, there is a free version that is almost identical to the full.. I use the full version because the lite software only allows grading up to 1080 resolution and the majority of my projects are now at least 2k.

Thanks for the kind words. The camera settings were set to smooth with everything dialled down to -2. After doing some testing today though, I will be shooting most of my new GH2 material on nostalgic, as it has some major advantages for grading.

As for the post work, I ingested/transcoded to ProRes 422 HQ with FCP X (I love it for these kinds of projects), made my selects and sent to resolve for color.. There I made some minor curves adjustments, an obvious saturation window on the interviewee and exported ProRes/xml back into FCP X. There I dropped in some lower thirds and titles I made quickly in after effects and under an hour later - it was done!

Can you expand on what those advantages are for Nostalgic?

Sure.. Ultimately it's just a matter of personal preference, but if you color correct all of your projects (which I do), than you want the most information preserved in the image as possible. The nostalgic setting is the closest the GH2 can get to a "log" color space, while still shooting Rec. 709... Therefore leaving you the maximum amount of color information to work with. I took a few quick test shots of high contrast images (comparing nostalgic and smooth) and the nostalgic effect handled the contrast significantly better. The slight tint of color it adds isn't an issue, I just created an LUT that neutralizes the effect and adds a slight curves adjustment for a bit of contrast. From there, I have a ton of detail to work with... Well maybe not a ton.. It's an 8 bit camera after all.
