Test-Video AG-AF 101 / Hamburg

Okay, this video was shown on the German "hands on" tour for the AG-AF 101.

The guys really gave the camera a hard time, ISO 400 to 1200, small lighting kit, lot's of movements, over-crank....

Looked extremely clean on a big monitor....

Don't know what their settings were, But they pushed the 4:2:0 material from the cards quite a bit around in post (so I guess they wanted that look) and they normally actually do lot of stuff with the Canons I believe.

They stressed that they wanted to see how the camera "behaves" under the rather tough circumstances of a quick shoot for a low budget clip. What I found great was how well the camera put up with 1200 ASA.

I like it, ALOT.
The resolution is very good and low light is clean. You seem to have pushed it hard in post and it has stood up well.

Thanks, this has made me think about the AF100 again.

Very nice, though with the typical motion blur, low shutter that the Europeans seem fond of. Would have much preferred a 180 degree film shutter, or equivalent if this was shot 25fps. Very quite nice anyway.

Haha, I didn't realise we were fond of low shutter speeds... this looks like 1/50 to me, with the exception of the slow motion work.

Tipota,
I thought it looked excellent, I have a few questions:
1. Was that AVCHD, or did you have an external recorder?
2. Did you grade the footage? (ie, Color, DivInci, etc.)
3. What lenses did you use?
Once again great job, I wish people would take into consideration Vimeo, Youtube, etc. compression.

Hi...

....thought it was stated more clearly.... this is NOT material I shot. Sorry.

It was produced by a young company from Hamburg "saubere filme" (clean films). Check them out on vimeo. As far as I understood them, they used only material from the cards (for overcrank you can use only this method).

They did some grading and were under the impression that the codec actually was rather forgiving when pushed around.

The guy mainly responsible is called Jan Brockmann - he was the main speaker on this "hands on" tour. The audience was rather happy with the results it saw on a big screen

So: NOT MY VIDEO.

For number 3, from vimeo:

Saubere Filme said:
we used some of the Lumix lenses (45mm f2.8) and the Zeiss CP2's.

first thanks to tipota for posting our little test-movie here on dvx user!

i scrolled through the different posts you guys made and noticed some questions:

1. AVCHD Codec yes/no - yes we used the AVCHD codec of the camera because we wanted to see if its as bad as we heard. And we were suprised that it worked fairly well. We always used the PH 1080 25p mode with 24Mbits

2. We did just a little grading in Color. Since we had not a lot time to finish this whole project. We tried some heavier stuff on a few shots which aren't in this trailer but i will provide them as soon as our new website will be availabel in january 2011.

3. We mainly used the CP2's from Zeiss. We used all almost all lenses from the set except the 18mm and 100mm. For the focus transitions we used some Lumix Lenses like the 45mm f2.8.

I am not sure about the last comment/question concerning the compression of Vimeo & YouTube material, but for some reasons (and this adresses a very early post) the skintones got a little messed up during the vimeo/youtube encoding... but they are actually alright, as tipota said - on a big screen everything looks clean.

okay if there are more questions or comments or critics just hit me.

cheers

jan

Thank you for the test. Well done and looks great. (allowing for Vimeo)

I have been waiting to see how the camera manages dynamic camera movement. (fast pans /tilts)

It did very well.

Nice job.

hey billygoat,

yes indeed we used 1/50 shutterspeeds except for the slowmotion shots b/c the factory was very dark (and we only had about four or five little lights with us) and we couldn't sacrafice the lose of light due to a higher shutterspeed.

I'm confused. How is everyone saying this video looks great when all the shadows are washed out and the blacks are at 10 IRE? I don't think it looks that great at all. It needs proper color correction.

What did you use as a source for the waveform?
