Tentacle Track E timecode

@Peter C. I use Premiere Pro as my editor, but I'm finding it impossible to sync in the program. I used to use Pluraleyes (plugin for PP) and it was fairly quick and accurate, but the progress bar basically just freezes in PP when I try to sync in the timeline. And I'm not trying to sync multiple pieces of audio to my scratch audio. For example I filmed a subject with my c70 the other day using onboard mics from the camera and a Tentacle Track E on the subjects and PP could just not sync the files. There was some audio while we were driving (engine noise?) that was clipped on the lav, but for the most part it was clean...

@Jim Feeley Generally, my set up is a short shotgun mic going into my c70 (AT 875r) and the Tentacle Track E on one or two subjects...

I use FCPX so I can't speak about Premiere Pro I just assumed they all worked alike. One thing you can do to help syncing is the clap, for loud environment camera further away... Since you have the Track E. If you only have one camera buy a sync box and attach it to your camera.

Every thing is a trade off. For recorders no drop outs great audio but can't monitor (deal breaker for me) and added work to sync. Wireless direct to camera downside is clipping if not set correctly and drop outs but with a traditional uhs this never has happened to me plus you're monitoring for issue. Like Jim said there's no right way.

Thanks, Peter. Yes, there are always trade offs. I also like the Track E's because they're 32 bit... My Sync E just came and I did a quick test - very fast set up and syncs super quick in Premiere... @Jim Feeley I tried turning off/on my c70 with the Sync E attached and it seems to hold TC. Will it do so if I turn the camera off for long periods of time and/or turn off the Tentacle box? Thanks

If you power down the camera, but leave the Tentacle Sync attached and running, the camera *should* re-jam on power-up. That’s easy to check and to rectify. If you power down the Tentacle Sync, it won’t keep its time for too long.

And after all this talk, and my commenting that I’d only worked one show with a C70, I found out today that the show I’m on next week is using that camera (b-cam to a C300mkIII). But I keep timecode boxes on every camera, all day.

Thanks... Funny coincidence. LMK if you notice any quirks I should be aware of...

Will do. The one quirk I already know is the use of mini XLR for the audio inputs. So, I’ve had to order some specialty cables for my camera hops.

If you own the C70, I highly recommend getting the XLR adapter from Mid49, with two low-profile mini XLR connections on one end, and a compact and cage-mountable, dual-XLR block on the other. Your location sound mixer will thank you.

Just got back last night. Nothing terribly notable. Just make sure, as with any camera, that the time code menu is set correctly to free run, regen, and external jam. I kept a Tentacle on the camera all day, every day, and never had a sync issue.

Thanks. I ran a sync e II yesterday with my c70 and two track e units and it worked flawlessly. A little set up time up front but well worth it. I can’t believe I’ve been trying to sync all of this time via waveform!

Good to hear everything went well. I saw this video on the c70 and the Theos, reminded me of you even though you're using the Track-E. As much as I want to like Deity I can't fully trust them. I've heard people complain about noise and clipping. Sounds like the gain staging they were recommending was wrong and they use cheap amplifiers in the Theos.

Yeah, need to check this out. That YouTuber is a big c70 guy.

Loving it. Aside from it being a little bulky it’s everything I want in a cinema camera in terms of usability and the image is really amazing. This camera doesn’t get enough love LOL

The C70 can produce some stunning images (pending the quality of operator, of course). Looking forward to seeing the final product of what was shot this last week. I’m not sure when the series will release publicly.

Now that I think of it, there is one small quirk in the camera’s menu. I had a wireless hop on the camera, feeding the Ch. 1 mini XLR input. Went to set record channels 3 and 4 to the internal mics, just as a failsafe, and thought we’d done it. Then, we noticed nothing moving the meters on 3 and 4. Well, turns out that the C70 menu system has an extra level to actuate changes. Rather than just selecting the thing and exiting the menu, one must select the thing and then confirm the thing. A little annoying, but easily dealt with now that I know.

If you’ve ever used a Japanese web form, there’s always a confirmation step after the form is submitted. Maybe ok for elderly people, but highly unnecessary IMHO.

I haven’t seen that anywhere else in the past 30 years.
In general, the concept is common and seen in different forms (types).

Specifically for web forms, I've seen it in the USA regarding critical information (like government docs, employment, etc) where it asks you if you're sure all of the information is correct after you click to submit.

You also may come across it in subscription models, getting asked like three times before you finally confirm to cancel (IMO, this is obviously implemented for people not to finish the process and continue getting charged).

In other cameras you might have to hold down a button (or even two) to execute a command (ARRI). Like you go into the menu to choose something (like formatting a card) but then you have to do/take a second action to finalize the choice.

In many video games if you'd like to delete a save it will ask you twice, or sometimes ask you while the 'yes' is grayed out for 3 seconds before you can choose it.
