Television Commercials using the HPX170

Hi folks,

The time has come. I have been asked about the possibility of shooting a television commercial on a cable network. I don't think any of my work has ever made it to TV before although I did work for a foreign news agency in the past and god knows what they did with my footage over seas.

The particular cable network here that my prospect is interested in has HD. So beside shooting in HD, what other format considerations do I need to take into account when I shoot and edit? I shoot with the HPX and edits with Premiere and FCP. So for instance can I give them mp4? Can I use H.264? Can I shoot in progressive frame rates? How big can my file be?

I guess the best course of action is to call the network and ask, but perhaps some basic broadcast knowledge first before I call and make a fool out of myself.

Thanks

Every station is a little different. Personally I have never dealt with a station who has asked for an mp4 master, but then all of my work has always been down-rezed to SD.

you'll have to ask the cable company what they need. as william says, most will be different from the next. our local nbc station wants mp4 or xdcam, while the cable company is fine with my dvcprohd original...

No matter who hires you it is never foolish to call them directly and ask them about the format and deliverables. I also suggest getting it all in writing. A quick email is fine. In my experience broadcasters will want the final product delivered on Tape or Hard Drive. Also, they may expect all of the raw footage. Good luck. congrats on the job.

Awesome thanks for the inputs.

Just a prospect for now but hopefully something pans out! This would be a good unexpected break.

I have been asked to deliver in a number of different formats. But the most common are DVCPRO HD, DVCAM, HDCAM, Beta, Uncompressed, and ProRes.
