Technicolor teams up with Canon for DSLR's

According to Cinema 5D News, Technicolor postponed the release of their “CineStyle” from“later this month” to “We are targeting a release in the coming weeks but the date is not fixed!”

Not a biggie unless you're prepping a shoot in the next couple of weeks. At least I hope it's not a biggie.

as I posted on cinema5D it kinda sucks... I had Aerials set for the 30th to do some legit test footage on release day, was going to shoot downtown, sanibel island, and 10000 Islands in marco. Guess I haveto tell my pilot im going to have to push back to "the coming weeks" lol

Don't put too much stock in this new picture style. Even the Technicolor guy described it as "yet another flat picture style." And, as almost all of those have been busts on some level due to the limitations of the cameras, it would be a smart move to proceed as usual with "Neutral" with reduced contrast and saturation.

The real magic will come with Digic 5 -- the lowest noise output in history -- that will be released in the 5Dm3 the day after I purchase the FS100. If you like, I'll update you on my FS100 purchase date.

Now that's frakin funny right there!

I'll tell you what, there's lots of us in the same boat - some very interesting cams out right now, but I just can't move until I see what Canon does (in part b/c I've already got so much invested in their stuff already).

Thanks for making me laugh...

This is ludicrous - the texture of film and its extremely high resolution and high dynamic range is one of the most important factors.

No 7 stop dynamic range line-skipping barely 700p resolution DSLR is ever going to give you the much more important advantages of film.

I don't think anyone's saying that it will. But, if we can improve on what these cameras can do, then progress is being made. That's good for everyone involved.

Quite happy with the results I'm seeing from this, after pushing the image around a lot in After Effects. Thumbs up, Canon and Technicolor! Some quick screengrabs from inside AE, so these aren't full quality exorts exactly:

just downloaded it. Perfect timing for my trip to Punta Cana tomorrow morning :) 7 Days baby. I'll give this a test run on a 7D.

Yeah, right we know, DSLR's are not real video cameras as well.
Reminds me of all those old arguments as to why photography is not art.

A great picture style

A great picture style

I just downloaded and installed the CineStyle. I am very impressed! This is not just another flat picture style, this is much more. It drastically increased the dynamic range.

I tested in a dark room at ISO 160. With Canon's neutral picture style and a -4 contrast and -4 saturation setting everything in my frame was pitch black, with this new CineStyle I was able to distinguish everything in the room.

Download it now.

Either I'm being very stupid or it's my fault for using a cheepskate cam .

I tried to install it on my 550D, and all appears to be well in manual stills mode, I see user def 3 as CineStyle, all well and fine, but when I turn to movie mode, it's dissapeared, user def 3 shows Standard. What's happened!?

I tried to connect the can to EOS utility in Movie mode, but "register picture styles" was greyed out.

Help!

Dave

i wouldnt call it 'drastically'
but it is a better gamma curve with a well distributed latitude information
instead of all data being pushed in a clump on the highlights area, it gets distributed evenly downwards the shadows area.

i use to expose to the right on the histogram.. probably now i have to expose closer to the middle now
