Technicolor CineStyle vs. Picture Styles

Thanks, Manuel. I often just create a 2 to 5 point curve, which seems to work fine. I've been using Cinestyle, mostly because it's what I started with, but I'll definitely start switching over to flaat in the future.

tend to agree with paper_bag
'The main disadvantage seems to be risk of "banding" artifacts in the midtones, where similar hues get treated as the same hue, so that there's no smooth gradation. This appears as streaks across the image. (However, with Cinestyle off, you're at greater risk of banding in darker and lighter areas.) I also think there's some sort of destauration issue in the midtones, and that you can't increase saturation as easily as you might otherwise have been able to (or might have recorded in camera), since there's less information to work with.'

I've used only Cinestyle for the past few projects, but I think a better approach is to match the PS to the specific lighting conditions of the scene you are shooting.
If shooting a high contrast night scene, perhaps CInestyle is the best choice.

If you have large areas of flat color
(ie blue skies) you might end up with more banding when using Cinestyle, which you'll have to remove in post.
For the same reason not convinced that Cinestyle is the best solution for skintones which to my eye, can appear 'pasty' after CC (see above regarding saturation).
Has anyone else noticed this?

regardless of what PS you use, remember to expose to the right(without clipping)

Skin tones go south quickly when you start pushing it very aggressively, followed closely by banding. I have moved to using cinestyle for some specific situations and when I want a fairly low contrast final look. For most stuff I have gone back to neutral.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to post a screen (straight from camera) from our latest short (haven't done a big one since chasing liberty) and so very happy to report that flaat (now flaat_10) is still working wonders! This is a low light grab (either 5 or 6.4k iso; we shot with a 5D mark 3) and it's turning out really well. We've also shot during the day and it looks really really good… Can't show just yet though! It's not a full 5D mark3 / flaat short as we did use a GH2 for about half the short. However, they intercut quite well

I'll be sure to post once released (hopefully in a few weeks)

Thanks again Sam for such a great profile

I have been shooting weddings lately and am very happy using Cinema picture style. The great wedding Cinematographer Jason Magbanua recommended it to me and the great thing about it is, at times I need to do Same day edits and the color correction is simple to match and at times I just keep it like that in post because the colors are already great. But always experiment with what YOU like. This was just faster for me.

Thanks for posting but IMHO you might have captured more shadow detail and had less crushed blacks had you used Cinestyle

Perhaps you're right, but I know for a fact, if I had used cinestyle and started grading heavily, I'd be in trouble. With flaat, I tend to shoot closest to what I want in post to avoid this. (IMHO, best thing to do with these 8bit cameras)

Nice to hear, keep us posted!

Hope you enjoy! All the interior car scenes and a couple scenes at the institute are shot on the 5D mk3 with Flaat_10!

Looks like I'll have to test that profile again!

Looks good !!!

I've also been using Samuels Flaat10p since he came out with it. I've found it to be the easiest to edit and color correct. Flat enough to easily massage with color curves, but not so flat that it jacks with the color depth and noise in the middle.

Cheers,
Pete

Wow and fantastic don't quite do that piece justice. Incredible lighting and a most powerful story, just says BOOM !!!
