Technicolor CineStyle vs. Picture Styles

Haha well if we're just going to start comparing DSLRs to REDs...

As noted, it's a pedal car vs a Ferrari, but it's the same principal, maintaining maximum post latitude so color decisions can be made there and experimented with rather than being locked in at the time you capture.

I shot a short film over this past weekend using flaat and it's night and day in comparison to cinestyle/marvels

I'm very happy with flaat_2 right now; I'll be sure to post it up once complete

The real reason to shoot flat (CineStyle, Marvel, Flaat, log or even RAW) isn't so you can drastically change the "look" in post, it's simply to give you the ability to match shots within a scene. That's why the "pros" do it (and Spielburg does none of this, btw, it's Janusz Kaminski that is doing it on those films).

No, it's both. It's latitude and flexibility. For all the stages of color correction

Of course Spielberg isn't doing it, a colorist who does nothing but color correct all day making what most of us make in a week (or more) is doing it. "Simple" color correction is three passes. Only one of those passes involves matching the shots to each other.

Very cool!

好看!
It really looks good. Definitely is working a vibe. I am glad you left it flat rather than crushing it all back! Overall, very inspiring and spirited work. I didn't watch it with sound, so I don't know anything about the audio. Also, thanks NormanBates for working on the PS, but good job to you on working with the inherent aesthetic of the PS, which has rosy flesh tones, cyan touched blues, and low contrast.
I was also impressed with how you guys handled shooting the snow (some credit to colorist and NormBates for that too?).

Seems you guys really paid attention to what you were exposing.

What is your take on the highlight rendering? It seems to be doing a stellar job here in these screen shots:

1.

The blow out in the background looks nice.

2.

The high exposure on her face still looks natural. Other PS might not render so well.

WOW, that looks really awesome! can't wait to watch it "properly" at home! - it does have color correction, though, right? leading to a lovely low-contrast final look, but with work in post in any case, I think - it's the best looking Flaat thing so far, I'll feature it on the site :)

I'm convinced now. Going to add Flaat to my cinestyle test. I've been shooting it and have been quite pleased. I'm looking at Neat Video to clean up the noise in the frame. Maybe I won't need it now. We'll see.

NB - thanks for sharing your work. It's been helpful while sorting through lenses.

I still don't know where you guys are getting noise with cinestyle. By the time I add even a little contrast back I just don't see it in my shooting.
