C300: Technical : C300 (Light/Color/Exposure...)

Hi all. Few queries I have are as under (Pardon my ignorance on the subject) in production scenario !

1. Audio :

Why is it a better way to use an external recorder hooked onto a boom mike to record the main sound. Cant we hook the boom mic to the C300 XLR ports directly to have onboard sound recording. It might save some post-production syncing efforts. I am not sure on the sound Khz quality issues.

2. Matching C300 LCD Monitor to EVF Alphatron and TVlogic 5.6W monitor

What would be the steps to match (as close as possible) for production work - C300's Monitor to output on TVlogic5.6 and an Alphatron EVF. Since C300 Monitor has no means to calibrate one needs to match the TVlogic & Alphatron to that. Should one have more confidence on C300 monitor or other professional evf/monitor setups ?

3. Using Light meters Sekonic L758Cine with C300

I tried and surf info to learn more on using a Light meter as mentioned for cinematography but couldnt find much. Hope to get some help on the subject here. What i could see & read was - Light meter might help me light my subject within my camera's dynamic range/latitude ... but couldnt get much on it.

4. Using Gray Card & Exposure Card like Sekonic Target

How would they help me to program my camera to shoot pleasing images. Help in some steps involved.

5. When one would shoot on Clog how to judge Exposure ...

Using C300 LCD Monitor with VIEWassist mode ON we do get to see somewhat properly exposed footage but what about the external display where we do our lighting judgement ? How do one light the subject using Clog ?

I might have asked seemingly easy question by many but the detailed answers to them would surely help me gain some insight & learn more.

1) It's not totally necessary to record audio externally. The pre-amps on the C300 are quite good, and if you go through a mixer, even better. It's way more than adequate for dialogue recording. The best reason to do dual system is so that you're not cabled into audio and the camera is free to move however it pleases. For locked-off shots, it's not an issue.

2) You'll never get all those monitors to match color-wise. The LCD is actually going to be the closest match to color and gives the TVLogic resolution density a run for it's money. The LCD is way better than the Alphatron. Color on the TVLogic is terrible and not to be trusted. Don't trust any of those monitoring solution to give 100% accurate color representation. If you want real accuracy on set, a Flanders Scientific monitor is the only way to go.

4) A grey card is 18% Grey, aka middle grey. Place that in your frame, and put 18% grey where you want it. This is typically around 50 IRE for rec709 gammas, and 32-38 for log gamma. I've never used a sekonic target, but my guess is that it will help you determine where your DR stops are falling in a given lighting and exposure scenario.

5) You cannot output the "view assist" to an external monitor, it is only available in the C300's built-in LCD & EVF. It basically gives a live LUT preview of corrected Canon log while you're shooting. Here's a good start to learning about Canon Log's usage: http://downloads.canon.com/CDLC/Canon-Log_Transfer_Characteristic_6-20-2012.pdf

The basic guideline for proper exposure when shooting log is middle grey should be at 32-38 IRE and reflected whites no higher than 70. Learn to use a waveform monitor, and you're well on your way. Good luck!

Thx Cowpunk52 : Helped a lot.

Just that if one is using Clog for shoot then looking for color aint that imperative and easy at all coz the same be correct by colorist. So in such case does a proper calibrated production monitor finds any use esp on field.

Yes the Canon LCD is 1280x720 (( correct me if wrong)) equivalant to TVlogic and bit higher than Alphatron. I have seen many sets using TVlogic 5.6W/WP would those by for just focus pullers ? And Alphatrin be just for Camera Operators as a framing aid.

Also if one uses Clog then judging light is solely on Light Meters and just for idea sake one can program (to the possible limit) any production monitor to emulate a LUT look ? Or how does it work otherwise for color and exposure accuracy.

Which FSI models are mostly recommended and used by industry professionals.

Any of the 17" or bigger Flanders models are good. Not only will you get color critical monitoring, but also two C-Log LUTs, scopes, false color, pixel to pixel, aspect ratio markers. A display like this is very useful to light with if not relying on a light meter.

I am not very good with LUTs would you mean as above that the Two Clog LUT that comes on with FIS color grading monitor will help me look the footage as in I see on C300 LCD under View Assist mode ? If so that would help me double check with my light meter under nonLUT look on monitor & also under Clog LUTlook on monitor
