Ok this is the thing. Im hoping you guys can help me out by teaching me stuff you think I need to know. Im in the military and just got out of technical school for Videography. (I crosstrained into this and im coming from Carpentry) Well we learned how to use the Canon XL1s (yes, old crap compared to what you guys like) and now that Im getting here to the base and there is one girl that is in video and she is a lower rank than me so she hasn't been in for that long. I asked her to tell me what she knew about the DVX100a and she seemed unmotivated about it and didn't know too much besides auto settings and pointing and shooting what happens. So that kinda got me scared till I remembered you guys. She doesn't know where they have the manual to the camera but we are still looking. But anyway Im sure you guys can tell me much more than that manual can. Well thats my story, so here are my questions.

If you ever can think of anything that would be a cool tip to teach me about the DVX100a, can you post it in here for me to let me know? Also I dont know jack about the settings as far as all the White Balance settings they have here and all the back preset settings and whatever is in the menu. Im very new to this camera. First time really playing with it myself was today at work. I will be reading this post from work so it would be really cool to go from post to post learning something new about the camera and then trying it out. I apprecaite anyone that can help me with anything I dont know. Thank you so much!

Im sure others that are new to this camera might find this thread very useful also to get all the tips and tricks and how to's that they need all in one thread. Thanks alot!

Yep. The book is what you need. ANd read through this sight every waking moment :)

But I'm confused. You trained in tech school for videography, and they didn't teach you about white balance? I'm not trying to rib you, that just seems odd to me.

Nah they taught me all about White Balance. I just sat with the DVX100a for an hour trying to figure it out. so many settings and switches dealing with it and i wanted to be sure!

Hey Barry, you should give me a discount on the book. Like a military discount or something. :-( I just dont want to spend my own money really to learn the camera that the military bought for me. Kinda sucks. But you know.

well, skettalee,
best of luck with the military thing. i hope you're out of harm's way.
really, i just wanted to give you a shout-out for having reason in your avatar. reason is the jam. the best piece of software to come out in about 10 years. anyhow, keep your head up.

There's no substitute for Barry's Book, but if you spend a lot of time with the camera, and time here, it's the next best thing. I found I learn more by picking up a tip or two at a time, then actually shooting a bunch of test footage.

Thank you everyone for your help. I think I will end up picking up the book so it can be my reference guide to teach me things I forget through time and just to read when I get bored waiting for renders or dubbs at work. Im gonna spend alot more time here. As you can see in my post count I been a member for a while and have been posting but been gone at Tech School learning this stuff so havent been around in a while. Ill stick around now for sure. Thanks. Reason is the bomb, you are right. Im a master at that program too. Check out my forum sometimes man to get some free video tutorials on Reason that I made.
