Tarantino's "tributes"

Whether it is homage or a blatant redo, it's much better than the source.
If you enjoy it more, great. Some of his films should come with footnotes, so people can understand where the stuff is coming from at times.

And those you mention are true masters. I can't argue that list and wouldn't try to. But comparatively speaking, that's a minority.
Talent rises to the top. It may be a minority, but still numerous...your post sort of indicated that he was one of a handful....I see him as one of dozens.

Me too. But yes, original with '...how one does it."
Yes. I loved The Departed. Thought it was great. When I saw Infernal Affairs, I thought that was great, too. Marty acknowledged IA and it was made common knowledge that the film was based on a HK movie. (The Oscars made a mistake and said it was based on a Japanese film). I respect him for that.

QT lost some points with fans early on when he pretended he hadn't seen COF...they were cinema geeks like he was, and felt betrayed, I suppose. I met a fanzine publisher back in '92 or '93...this guy was really torn over it. I was a kid fresh from seeing Reservoir Dogs and enjoying it, so I didn't quite get him then...but I see his side of it now.

Agree in some part; sans PULP FICTION. That's Prime Rib in my book. Guyt has made 5 films.
Yeah, I was going to call it steak, but like flank or something like that. Five films, but his best stuff was a while back, for me.

In my opinion, he's waaay ahead of the game. His career will tell.
He started out of the gate like a jack rabbit, hit his stride with Jackie Brown and he's coasting now. I agree that his career will tell...and it isn't like the guy has been disgraced or anything. I'm just disappointed with the later stuff.

I feel a bit of relief being on the Love end of a Hate relationship. I've done it with De Palma and dig ti with QT.
WTF? Who doesn't like De Palma? I'm not saying he has to be everyone's favourite...but hate? Who could hate that guy?

Disagree completely. Reservoir Dogs ? Yes. A little bit of Pulp ? Yes. Jackie Brown ? No way.
Pulp Fiction did over $100 million domestically...Jackie Brown did under $40 million, with a bigger budget. Both Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 did much better numbers than JB, and they weren't as good, at least in my book. Of them all, JB was his most mature work...in execution and theme, and arguably the least appealing to teens and young adults. A HUGE portion of the film going audience.
Kill Bill ? I don't know. I've met more than one 20 something that wasn't into it.
Sure, and we both have met teens and 20 somethings who think it is the Alpha and Omega of filmmaking...

Deathproof ? Something tellms there was too much talky for the average 20 year old moviegoer.
Right...how did that do at the box office?

I haven't heard this. Avary ? The guy who wrote BEOWULF ? I think it's obvious who the real talent is in that relationship.
Yeah, Avary...the same guy who wrote the famous Top Gun speech about the veiled homo-eroticism that QT used in Sleep With Me (if I recall correctly), and who helped write dialogue on his early films. More than a few people see a link in QT's (perceived) decline in quality and Avary's absence.

It goes both ways I think, but depends on which side of the debate one is on.
That's the whole point. I don't see how one could hate all his stuff...and I don't think all his stuff is gold. People on here get so polarized about things sometimes. If one is to begrudge him his success because they feel he is not original, etc, fine....he isn't the first guy to borrow/steal/pay homage to, whatever. At least his stuff isn't half bad. It would be more insulting if it sucked.

The damn internet gets in the way of our meanings at times. I apologize for any uneccsary angst I showed. :+ )
Yeah, no problem...

Oh man, you'd be surprised, even on this site. I run into De Palma hatas' all the time. Depresses me. I have to like dose up on meds after those discussions.

Tarantino better ****ing rock the world with BASTARDS. If anyone is paying attention on that one, it is me. I like everything he has done but know gold when I see it. If that is homage and silly, I'll be let down.

Am I the only guy who thinks The Black Dahlia wasn't that bad?

It's no Scarface or Untouchables, but it wasn't that bad.

Plus how could you hate the guy who directed the video for Springsteen's Dancing In The Dark? (though it was a simple concert video, come to think of it...still, Courtney Cox never gave a better performance.)

It's not like the guy refutes any Hitchcock influences or borrowing of some style. Sure, he made Femme Fatale, Snake Eyes, The Bonfire Of The Vanities and Raising Cain(wow, did he ever make some crap)...but he also did Dressed To Kill and Carlito's Way.

I'm rooting for him to make a comeback...him, and Michael Cimino.

The Black Dahlia

I loved it; own it.

can't fathom what was missed on this film. I love Snake Eyes but admit defeat on those others mentioned. Dressed To Kill, Body Double, UNtouchables, Scarface, Carrie, Sisters, Blow Out, Carlito's Way; awesomeness

LOVE DE PALMA

What happended to Cimino ? The Deer Hunter is poetry and I confess I totally dig Year of the Dragon

DePalma's a mixed bag in my opinion. I never dug Scarface (or completely understood the appeal), but I loved the Untouchables, Carrie, and dug Carlito's Way and Snake Eyes. He bombed with Bonfire (but who wouldn't have) and Mission Impossible was a clunker for me.

But he never makes the same movie twice. Gotta give him that.

Oh wait, he's making a sequel to The Untouchables...

As for QT, I don't think he's skating, but I don't think he will make another great film until he learns to collaborate again. To me he's like Lucas or Rodriguez. They can do what they want because they have gotten to a point where people can't (or won't) tell them "no"... so they do. I believe that great films come from the creative conflict between the director/actor/writer/producer. It's how you find out what matters, and steers you away from self-indulgence.

But, they don't owe me anything, and I don't blame them for the choices they make.

I enjoyed The Black Dahlia. It's a nice companion piece to Hollywoodland. I just got Heaven's Gate but haven't watched it yet.

Hmmm

That is an insightful spin Jim.

I'm almost agreeing on that one. :undecided

This did.

I've never seen it, but it apparently ruined his career.

Yeah, it basically put him out of work for a few years, and even then, it hovered over him like a dark cloud.

Heaven's Gate was just discussed heavily on TVO...sort of ahead of it's time, and too political. It's actually supposed to be a good film, if you give it the chance and watch it. Elway Yost and his crew sure do their homework...nobody knows films like he does...except for, perhaps, Brian Linehan.

Actually, Year Of The Dragon came out after that...but it didn't help him too much. I loved YOTD...and am a huge Mickey Rourke fan, but critics didn't warm up to it too much, and it didn't do great box office.

John Lone was great...I often think of the scene at the long table with him carrying the head of White Powder Ma.

I forgot about YOTD. Great flick. There's a book about the whole Heaven's Gate fiasco that I've been meaning to read, but I can't remember the name at the moment.

And I liked Raising Cain. John Lithgow is Uber-Creepy. But I may have been drunk when I saw it. That used to happen a lot.

Calm down, my film loving brothers. I didn't say that now I hate Tarantino. I still think he bust serious ass. I always knew his influences and how he likes to "pay tribute" to certain films/generes. What I didn't know is that he literaly cloned many scenes from films he likes.

yes, yes, i read you loud and clear... you can't stand the guy, WE GET IT!!!

Ok, you got me. Being the shallow guy that I am I have to say the reason I don't like his movies is because of his hair. It just grinds(house) my gears. Why can't he go for a David Lynch hair style?!

i liked Tarantino... until i learned he was asian, and I dont like asians! that's right, that's just who i am, so deal with it!

same goes for Lynch... that's a very asain hair style if you ask me!

The term "asian" was originally used by the early settlers in New Orleans greeting the displaces Acadians. You are obviously bereft of any originality. Maybe you see using the term asian as some sort of "homage" or "hummus" or "whatever", but it seems like a blatant ripoff to me.

Oh wait, that's "Cajun". Nevermind, you're a genius.
