Tapes???

After doing a lot of forum reading, I decided to use Panasonic AY-DVM63AMQ tapes. In fact, I just picked up 8 new tapes on Ebay for $31 delivered!

We use the Panasonic HDV master minidv's and I'm pretty sure that our los angeles associates do as well. We order ours from Camera Direct right down the street.

I use Sony HD 63 minute tapes.

FYI- For those who don't know...NEVER switch between brands of tapes. Choose one brand and stick to it. The tape lubricants don't mix between brands and causes drop outs. I know this from having drop outs after switching brands and shooting an on stage show.

Just trying to get the info out....

I have been using the Sony Premium tapes and have had no problems but I haven’t been shooting HD. Would it be ok for me to start using the Sony HD tapes, I want to start shooting everything in HD and would hate to run into a DROP out problem.

Tapes - A Cautionary Tale

Tapes - A Cautionary Tale

I've always used Sony Premium. On one occasion using an XL1S I lost the first 25mins of a wedding due to dropout, no warning! Since then I have become paranoid and alway run a cleaner 10 tape for 10secs before each wedding then record a few seconds to test. This has worked well and now on the XHA1 have recorded in SD for a year with no dropout problems. Recently decided to start shooting HD using the Premiums. The first wedding was brilliant. Second wedding I think I forgot the cleaner routine because the entire wedding has glitches every 10 to 30 secs ranging each a few seconds to minutes long. Each one is a frozen frame with no audio. My Sony deck wouldn't even play the tapes and eventually managed to download off the camera in SD. The edit was a nightmare. Fortunately I had a second camera for the ceremony and got away with the remainder except the speeches where the glitches are just deadly and now I have an unhappy customer.

Moral: don't be a cheapskate, pay the extra for HD tapes!

I am wanting to spend the money on HD tapes but am still confused about one thing. The Sony premium tapes are not lubricated correct? And the Sony HD tapes have lubricant? By me making the switch will this cause the heads to gum up. I was thinking about sending my camera out for cleaning, should I make the switch after getting it cleaned.
