Tape transfer hardware

This maybe a stupid noobie question, but I can't find an answer through my attempted searches. Currently I am transfering my videos from my Canon XH A1 to desktop via firewire. I have found a Sony device ( HVR-M15AU Desktop HDV VTR) that seems to transfer from desktop to tape, I want the opposite from tape to desktop. Is there another device that is faster/more reliable that doesn't cost an arm & leg (have about $2k budgeted).

Thanks in advance!

I've got the answer to my questions. First, if you are looking for a "Tape Reader" similar to a CF or SD card reader, it does not exist you want to look for a tape deck instead. Sony and JVC make several good decks starting around $800 and go WAY up from there. I chose the Sony HVR-M15AU HDV VTR.

Did you check to make sure your Canon HDV will play nicely with the Sony HDV deck? I seem to recall that the two do not get along. If you shot strictly 60i it may not be an issue. But I seem to remember the discrepancy has something to do with how the two record other frame rates. It's been a long time since I worked with tape so you may want to speak with someone with more insight.

The Sony deck you mentioned can copy your tapes into the computer, as well. BTW, we video folk call that "digitizing" or "capturing", not "downloading" or "transferring".

Thanks Jim,

So far I've been able to "capture" 60i, 30p, and 24p. Everything with this deck has worked without fail.

Glad you were able to decipher what I meant.
