Tape Stock

I read the handful of threads on tape stock already, but still had a few Q's.

1). Do you have to use HDV tapes with the a1 to shoot HDV...I saw some threads where people said they don't.
2). can you re-record over a tape and not lose image quality?
3). there's no way I'm paying 24 bucks for those canon HDV tapes every time (I might as will have gone p2)...which brand of cheaper tape stock should I get?

1. I can confirm that you can record onto a mere Panasonic PQ and playback HD footage with the A1. You run a greater risk of dropouts than if you used a dedicated HDV tape.
2. I don't know, personally I wouldn't do it for quality reasons.
3. I have been using a Panasonic HDV tape, costs about 8 per tape. I would post the item #, but B&H website is down right now.

I've had to record over a tape before in a pinch and the quality is the same. You simply run a greater risk of having drop outs and ruining valuable footage. So if it's important, don't do it.

I use the Sony DMV-63HD brand. My local Fry's carry these for about $25 for 3 tapes which isn't too bad.
