Tape Recommendations?

AMQ's are what I am using. But I also need to put fuel in the tank, and 5 bux a tape or 5 bux a gallon, what's it gonna be?

Thats actually not true...you need gas to get to work which gives you money. And I dont know many people who walk to work.

I've been shooting (300 hrs) on Maxell and never had a problem. I get them in bulk packs at Sams wholesale for about $2.50 a piece...

If you record over a tape a few times it starts to lose quality, i have done that when filming BMX, I used the same tape the entire summer (a lot of filming) not one frame dropped on the Canon tapes but there was more noticable grain.

I really find this hard to believe. It's not film or anything. It is either there or not. You will not get more grain by re-using tapes. Just better chances of drop outs.

I think the issue is not recording 1's and 0's, but the friction created as the tape moves across the head. A higher quality tape, in theory, should leave less particles inside the cam. The same theory would apply to reusing tapes. Repeated friction causes the tapes to lose more tiny particles. Think about your old VCR. Remember when you would go to the video store and couldn't watch the movie because the tape was so bad from repeated plays... oops, maybe I'm too old for this discussion. lol

I think it all depends on the tapes. Maxell tapes work well, and the panasonic ones are nice also. Just on the canon tapes ive noticied a loss of quality after re-recording over them so many times.

I use Panasonic DVM60 Tape - the cheapest in Russia. I nave no problem with these tapes. My DVX 102b hour meter shows more than 300 hours. I prefer dvm60 with screws on the bottom - they have same boby as tape included with my camcorder. I cleaned heads only once, after 200 hours of using. Excuse me for my English - I am from Russia... :)

I would stay away from sony tapes, they use a wet tape which can gunk up your heads.

I use Fuji tapes exclusively, myself. Iv'e never had any dropouts or problems of any kind. I have one Fuji tape that I use for experimenting with scene file settings and have recorded over it many times with no problems whatsoever. I don't like Sony tapes at all and I won't use them.

Regardless of tape u use - do not switch to another brand after having used one brand. I only use Panasonic because the previous owner did the same - lucky that I have less than 90 hours on the heads and now I am the second owner.

An even better tape is the Panasonic AY-DVM63AMQ (Advanceed Master). It's a little more expensive, but if you're a semi-professional as I am, you'll get great picture with no dropouts. I purchase the tapes in 5 piece quantity from B & H Photo in New New York. I paid $6.75 a piece. I buy in 25 lots.

Every brand of tape will give you exactly the same "great" picture. No matter what tape you use, choose one and stick with it, I use Sony tapes with no problem until now.

don't switch tapes unless it is absolutely necessary and never never use cleaning tapes. they are mild sand paper to the heads--that's how they clean and it is also why there is a warning not to use the clearner very often. Ever notice that the cleaning tape is warm when it's done---that's the friction, imaging sand in your underwear. JUST DON'T DO IT EVER!
