Tape Length and capture

I was just told by a technician at a well-known video restoration service that I should be using the hour-long tapes instead of the 40dvcam sony for a better image. But I thought the reason it's okay to use the shorter length tape (which gives me an hour of actual image) is because it runs slower on hdv cameras. So why would a longer tape give a better image if it runs through camera at same speed?

The technician has no idea what he's talking about. There's a general misconception that using different tapes or recording in SP vs. LP mode will give a better image. It does not. The image quality is identical whether you record in SP, LP or DVCAM (which the A1 doesn't do). The difference is the durability of the tape with regards to drop out or other artifacts. LP mode for example gives you longer run time by recording on the edge of the tape strip, but is more likely to have messed up audio or drop frames when you capture. Image quality stays the same.

is it true though that the Canon ahx1 in HD mode runs tape slower than when shooting in SD? -- which is why a Sony 40' tape actually records for an hour in HD?
thanks
